Another excuse to look away from the economy...email!

I understand the uproar over Sara Palins email getting hacked, and I have to say upfront that I hope the person(s) that did this are brought to justice. But I also have to say, I can't help but wonder if this "outrage" on behalf of MCain/Palin isn't just another distraction to get us to not focus on the issues. This week specifically the economy. Before Gov. Palins email was hacked there was already a controversy brewing about her use of email. More specifically if she was using a yahoo account as opposed to a government account to "get around the public records law through broad exemptions or private e-mail accounts?” (Anchorage Daily news) Is it any coincidence that the man who has access to the server logs, has said he would cooperate if contacted by law enforcement, but has yet to be contacted? And let's keep in mind that those logs expire in 7 days. And why is it okay for Yahoo to release any private data the government asks for, but the minute citizens start looking into the government... And finally, I find it almost beyond words that McCain is so upset about someone hacking into Sara Palins email when he seemed to condone this behavior when he hired Carly Fiorina as his economic advisor. Isn't she the same CEO who paid to hack into Hewlett Packard’s Board of Directors personal emails? What's your take on this? I understand that it is illegal to hack into email acounts, but anything can be hacked into, should this really be such a big deal?

Wow, I guess there's no attacks too low for some democrats. The woman's email gets hacked, her personal and private messages read and private pictures of her family spewed across the internet. What a great time to kick her while she's down eh? This garbage sickens me too much to even bother to contest your lame attacks individually. It's just pathetic. FYI, the word "but", negates everything preceding it.

Gimmee a break Taskr, there was nothing in this discussion that was attacking Palin. Even my 13 year old knows the internet, including email accounts, can potentially be anything but private. Would it have been different to you if it was the government checking out her emails? What makes it any different if she gets hacked as opposed to the millions of others this has happened to?

"Gimmee a break Taskr, there was nothing in this discussion that was attacking Palin." You're making accusations against her about using private email for government business with no evidence. You are accusing the McCain campaign of using this to distract from the economy. You're acting as though she has anything to do with how long it's taking law enforcement to complete their investigation. "Would it have been different to you if it was the government checking out her emails?" If the government wanted to look at her personal emails in her private Yahoo account they would require a subpoena. If they hacked into her email without one it would be suppressed as evidence, and they could face penalties for violating her privacy. Her government email however is public domain which anyone can look at should they make a public records request. "What makes it any different if she gets hacked as opposed to the millions of others this has happened to?" Well in case you missed it she's the Vice Presidential nominee. The other thing that makes this different is the scumbags who are spreading this crap all over the internet. Most people don't have to worry about their teenage daughter's cell phone number being posted on every liberal blog there is.

But that's just it Lakota...there was a potential scandal brewing before this happened that she was using a personal email account to conduct state business, not very smart to begin with. By the way, how have you been feeling?

No matter who is doing it, it is a crime.

First, I believe that the only reason Palin's "personal" email was attacked was because it has been a center of controversy for a while now. There was profit in it for the hackers in one way or another. I do have issues with someone trying to get around transparency in government rules by using a loophole. I believe that using a Yahoo mail account for any kind of sensitive data is dangerously naive and it tells me something about Palin's judgment, or the judgment of her advisers. That said, I think it's reprehensible for someone to invade another's privacy and make the results of their illegal activities publicly available through a gossip/media site. I think it IS a big deal, not in terms of the campaign, but in terms of the kind of judgment that would expose a person and the state for which they are responsible to this kind of risk.

Thank you chameleon, you hit the nail on the head! It shows insanely poor judgement, but as of yet I have heard nothing about that brought up.
