one and only solution is planting and preserving Trees. avoid pollution. I use cycle for short distances.that how i am contributing to this in many small ways like cycle, planting trees, and more

I agree with you on trees being an important part of the solution! If the deforestation process could be slowed down.. new trees planted as often as is possible then the greenhouse effect could very well be contained..
Stopping deforestation is something that are the responsibility of governments and global corporations.. So if there is a way to influence policy there, that would be awesome !
What one can do on the other hand with relative ease is plant more trees :0) And riding the bike is healthy too :)

well if you are Canadian plz vote NDP and protest Steven harpers clean air act also please try to use public transportation and buy a fuel efficient car coming from me that is hypocritical because i got a tricked out gto but it burs at the normal level believe me it took a long time to get that to happen lol also but 50 50 fuel ethanol is a great solution
one thing i really want to stress is the fact that the us is reluctant to join Kyoto and carelessly burns fossil fuels we can force the us government to reduce emissions by adding the polar bear the endangered species list i hope this was helpful keep protesting

Quite a few suggestions there !! :)
I don't know much about the NDP or the Steven Harper's clean air act so all I am going to say here is do what you think is right :)
I also understand the passion for cars :0) and hence the tricked out GTO while you are suggesting fuel efficient cars :) and it looks like you put in a lot of effort to have it fuel efficient !
Ethanol using cars are coming into the market now.. though there are some people who have some reservations against ethanol..
I am not sure how adding polar bear to the endagered species list would help the US government to reduce emissions... can you tell more about this :) ?
Protesting helps :) but efforts on a personal level (doing things on your own and hence setting an example) work too !!

Well not that I'm againt the Americans (actually I think most of them are quit nice and good people), but the americans really should start thinking about their 5.0 liter V8 or V6 engiens, I know quit a few Americans and they all have big car and most of the have two, and they drive to anything, even if its only a few blocks away, I think there is really a need for atitude changes about this problem among many Americans, I vote for 6$ a gallon, it might start to make them think :)

To be honest with you, a bit of an extreme suggestion but I totally understand where you are coming from..
Gas prices did go up this last summer.. and people did feel the pinch of the gas prices in the US.. The state of CA has legislation in effect to promote hybrid vehicles and I think long term goals for more eco-friendly cars..
Automobile manufacturers and Venture Capitalists are actively looking into fuel cell, more efficient hybrid, and ethanol based automobiles..
I feel the people in the US are better aware now of the effects of global warming and are working towards doing something about it :)

No, I haven't seen that movie :( ... What is the movie about ?
Hybrid cars are doing quite well in California this year.. That's a step forward in my opinion :) Eventually there will be more electric, non-conventional energy source driven cars on the road.. but the first steps have already been taken :0)

They need to bring back the electric car! Have you seen that movie by the way: "Who Killed the Electric Car?"

I am very concerned about global warming as they are saying that Greenland is threatening to break up and the ice melt. If this happens then my home here in Netherlands will be sunk under water. That is scarey to me. Here in the Netherlands most people have bikes and I think that if America made bikes more appealing to people and give them proper bike paths like they have here then the pollution and congestion would ease up and there would be less pollution. It is possible if people stop being so dependant on oil.

There are a lot of proper bike paths in the US :) Atleast in the area where I live and people in cars share the road with the people on bikes.. While I understand the belief that the US might be the largest consumer of petroleum, there are other countries that are not far behind :) It is true that each and everyone of us are in some way or the other are contributing to global warming.. My question was directed more at what each of us could do in our day-to-day living to help reduce the effects of global warming...
Your comments are appreciated ! :) Hopefully some more people would have taken to alternate means of transportation after reading your comments... Atleast that is the hope of this discussion... Change -- one person at a time.. one instance at a time... :)

Have you read the above responses? There are plenty of good and tangible ideas right here in this thread that you can implement in your own life. Such as more sustainable modes of transportation and using low wattage lightbulbs, etc. And of course, recycling is good, and who knows if anything is enough anymore, but that still shouldn't discourage us from trying.

Thank you Kazookulele for responding :0) Its very important to never forget that every journey begins with the first step... that whatever happens in this world starts with one person taking the initiative and sticking to doing something when everyone else has given up on the person or the activity :) So please do read the suggestions in this discussion and see what you can adapt to doing.. and tell your friends and neighbours about it too :) Believe me, you'd be doing a lot ! :)

As I live in quebec, I can confirm that my little world has changed since I was young. I don't know if we have reached a point of no return, but I have done many changes in my life in order to influence my relatives. At least, I am trying.
I am 21 years old, I live far away from my parents and still I don't have a car. Either I use public transporation (free for students) or I walk. Later, if necessaary, I will buy an hybrid car. We should put pressure on our governments to make them use clean energy (wind, solar, electricity), but when I see that both Canada and the USA rejected the Kyoto Protocol, I feel very small...

I commend you on your efforts ! I can understand the feeling when you say that you felt small when Canada and the US rejected the Kyoto Protocol.. but I am sure there are things you can do to motivate and educate people around you.. and maybe with better educated and more motivated people, maybe you can influence the government one day :0)
By the way, what changes have you observed that makes you say that maybe we've reached the point of no return ? Do share it with us.
Kazookulele, how do you get around in the winter ? Public transportation or do you have other means ? Do share..

I also don't have, nor have ever owned a car. And living in winnipeg, it gets cold and biking can suck in the winter, but unfortunately here public transit is not free for students (that must be nice). But I get around.

The Kyoto Agreement is an international treaty that is looking into reducing Green House Gas emissions...
More can be read here:

Supporting parties that support the Kyoto treaty helps too !! :) I didn't think of that !

Nothing, the environment runs in cycles, and global warming is overhyped. It was supposed to be making much stronger hurricanes and would hit the US with monster hurricanes this year. That didn't happen, just goes to prove the "scientists" are actually spin-doctors for political interests.

Nature is known to correct itself in the grand scale of things.. So the environment running in cycles is possibly quite true.. however we in our lifetime would not be able to see the cycle happen.. I disagree that global warming is overhyped.. While scientists might be incorrect in their predictions, global warming is very real. Hurricane Katrina was one of the strongest hurricanes to hit the US. The El Nino and The El Nina weather systems were the effects of global warming and the polar ice caps are melting at an alarming rate.. I'd suggest reading up more before concluding that this is all just hype..

Global warming is indeed a serious problem, but there are many things we as individuals can do in our lives to help. The automobile is a good one. Ride a bike, walk, or take public transit. Or carpool. The dependency on the automobile in our society is one of the most devastating problems around, but one that can be changed. Because of this dependency, however, and the lack of desire for change in many people, we need laws and restrictions to be put on automobile use, such as in some European countries which have done this. Also, in our own homes we can switch to low watt light bulbs and turn off lights when not in the room. I also like the idea you proposed of planting trees. Another huge thing we can do is eat locally grown and organic food whenever possible. The energy and fossil fuels that are consumed in the transportation and production of food is vast, and eating locally can help out a lot. There are so many ways, these are just a few tangible acts we can do in our day-to-day lives. Good discussion topic, i hope more people respond.

Thoughtful comments!
The dependence on and usage of petroleum products is THE major cause for global warming.. and I agree with you on tangible acts that we could do in our day-to-day lives which could greatly reduce the global warming effects and send an emphatic message to people who interact with us..
Your suggestions on alternate means of commuting and growing and eating locally grown and/or organic foods are awesome suggestions.. I didn't think of food tranportation at all before..
And yes, I do hope more people respond.. I see quite a few interesting ideas getting bounced around in here :)

Global warming is the first environmental issue facing the Earth., so I really concern with global warming too, cause at my place really get worse as temperature rise. There's many danger signs have already started appearing at my country,
climate changes, mudflow, flood and decreasing fresh water source.
Among factors that may be contributing to global warming are the burning of coal and petroleum products and forest exploitatin.

While stopping of car driving is not immediately feasible... one can reduce the instances one takes ones' car out :) It might be a good idea to go for that walk or for that bike ride instead of hopping into the car for every small thing....
And that ties in with the comment that followed :)

I think people should recyle, use less, make sure their governments are also doing things that support our environment and not big business.

Recycling helps a lot !!! I recycle all the glass containers, aluminum cans, plastic bottles and newspapers.. The city also provides cash incentives to recycle making it a bit easier to not feel lazy..
Making sure that the governments are doing their bit to support the environment requires that people are aware of what's happening with their government... which measures are being introduced.. what are the pros and cons about these measures and how one can express their opinion in such matters.. All these things could potentially discourage an individual from doing anything.. but you are right.. this is something that we should do !! :)

Awesome point you've brought up!
CFCs or Chloro Fluoro Carbons are responsible for the ozone layer depletion and hence contribute to global warming. More on them in here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freon#Chlorofluoro_compounds_.28CFC.2C_HCFC.2C_HFC.29
They are mostly used as refrigerants, propellants and cleaning agents.. CFCs were banned by the Montreal Protocol.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal_Protocol
I did not know much about the Montreal Protocol till I read about your comment on the CFCs.
