Why do some people take discussions too seriously?

Many a time, I was just talking to someone when I stumbled on a hot button topic. Lo and behold, this person believes in the polar opposite of me and flies into this rant about this or that.
My question is, what posses people to do this? Is it the ego whispering in their ear that their side is better and they have the best irrefutable arguments? Some sort of attention complex, that their opinion is so niche that they have to inform the rest of the world of their beliefs? Or something else.
Related mini-question: If you do get into an argument like this, what is the best way to get out?

You can never please anybody. That is a fact. So, don't worry about any persons contradicting (or ranting about) your post. It means that he or she actually read it and disagrees with you - that is healthy argument. Life will be so boring without such contradictions.

Thanks for the response.
I actually only just joined, so I don't have experience with debates here on myLot. I was only reflecting on this time a few weeks ago when a friend and I had the debate team captain cornered against a wall because he was a die hard supporter of his ideal. We had him beat for sure, but he just kept saying this and that, until finally he gave up.

I don't take any of the discussions here too seriously. They don't change the world as many believe it to do. Yes, attention craving might be one thing that provokes people indulge in their oh-so-serious talks. But might not be the only catalyst. I know some people in here and in the real world too who believe being too serious and acting such and such to just prove their point. Anyway, in the myLot way, sometimes, the discussions themselves are way too serious in the messages they tend to deliver and that's where I'll not mind anyone behaving seriously enough.
