Our church is really into the new praise and worship music. I'm a part of the praise team and I am a big fan of contemporary Christian music too. But 2 weeks ago my church had an old-fashioned hymn sing! I think I was a kid the last time I went to one. We sang "victory in Jesus", "Blessed Assurance", "When we all get to heaven", "It will be worth it all (when we see Jesus)"and so many more. The men in the congregation were especially in rare form and occasionally we would split the verses with the women singing one verse and the men the next. What a way to worship and what a blessing to all who attended. What are some of your favorite old hymns? Do you have any stories associated with them that you can share?

I think "Amazing Grace" is my very favorite hymn, but I like all those you mentioned. There seems to be a different aura when the congregation sings hymns. However, I like praise songs as well. "Shout to the Lord." "As the Deer," In the Presence of Jehovah," and "I Am the God Who Healeth Thee" are some of my favorites. I prefer a mix of hymns and worship/praise songs that lead the congregation into an attitude of listening for the message from God through the preacher or priest.

Thank you retiredrdh, Our church has two services. Our first service is in our original sanctuary and features a mix of praise and worship and hymns with acoustic/piano/organ accompaniment. Our second service is in our gymnasium/auditorium (we need the space) and is strictly contemporary. I sing with that praise team (guitars, keyboards, and drums). I love all music and that's why it was nice for me to hear the old hymns again!

My favorite hymn is "A Mighty Fortress is My God," and my favorite contemporary hymm is "Our God is an Amazing God," I have other favorites such as "Amazing Grace" , that Harvest Home hymn and "Oh God our Help in Ages Past"- I think they sang it when the Titanic was sinking. I love the old hymns and I also like the Psalms especially that Psalm 23 from the Scottish Psalter. And I do love the Christmas hymns but it is not Christmas yet.

I wish we would sing Christmas hymns even when it wasn't Christmas. I just love them, especially What Child is This? and O Holy Night. Suspenseful, what is your favorite Christmas hymn?

Our church has really moved on into the chorus kind of praise and worship music, but I love when we sing an old hymn or two. You mentioned some of my favorites, but I have so many it would be impossible to name them all! Some of my other favorites are Just a Closer Walk With Thee, Up From the Grave He Arose, How Great Thou Art, and Heavenly Sunlight. Thanks for reminding me of them!

I especially remember "up from the grave he arose" from my sunday school days. We always sang the verses really softly and then we'd come in really loud on UP FROM THE GRAVE HE AROSE! thanks:)

I've been a member of my church's choir since I was six years old. I just love to sing these hymns and I can feel elation everytime I sing. This feeling never waned with time and even with all the trials and problems that came in my life. Those tribulations even made me wanted to sing the hymns more. I'm sure our church doesn't have the same hymns in other church (I'm no Catholic nor Protestant) so I'm sure you are not familiar with the hymns we sing, such as my personal fave "In My Duty I Have Found My Salvation". However, I guess some of our Wedding Hymns are quite familiar. I've been a Wedding Soloist since I was 18 years old and wedding hymns, especially those that were sing for the exchanging of vows never fail to touch my heart. I definitely love "The Vows", "Walk Hand in Hand with Me" and "With This Heart". Sigh... I just love singing hymns of praises to the Lord.

It is always good to sing some of the Old Hymns from time to time as well as the New stuff out there as well. I think the problem is sometimes, there are some of the Newer people coming into our Church, as well as some of the younger ones that have never heard some of these songs, and really are missing out. There are some that I just love to hear and sing as well. "When We All Get To Heaven", "I'll Fly Away", "We Shall See The King", are just some of my favorites I miss singing from the olden days as well. Every once in awhile I will hear these, but most of the time I think people are just afraid too anymore.

I think that you are right. We know that many people did not grow up in the church and we are afraid that our "old-time" songs would not appeal to them or turn them off. I've said this before, but I think we could put the words and tune to a more contemporary style. We shouldn't just throw them out. Thanks:)

I like some old hymns. How Great Thou Art, Just As I Am, What A Friend We Have In Jesus etc. Among choruses that are sung for praise and worship I like These Are The Days Of Elijah, You Are My Hiding Place, My Redeemer, God Is Good All The Time, Shine Jesus Shine, Servant King etc. But I am afraid if modern songs are losing the message of the cross. The old hymns have profound theology in the lyrics which the modern songs seem to be missing out. Just my observation!

Hi mechanicNOT, Just make sure that you don't worship hymns but rather that your songs worship HIM.

There are so many good older hymns and I would have to say that "Amazing Grace"," I'll Fly Away". and "Victory In Jesus" are three of my favorites. I am very good friends with a family who toured for years into different churches and sang and they have so many songs that I like. Then my friend went out on his own and began to do more contemporary stuff, but I think I liked the other stuff better. However, you might have heard of his group- Sunday Drive or of him Buddy Mullins. He is a fabulous songwriter and musician plus a super nice guy.

My favorite hymn has to be Amazing Grace. I also like Nearer My God to thee. I love praise songs by Delirious but my absolute favorite songs to sing is by a woman named Heather Clark. She has many cd's out and she and her husband founded a church in a city about 5 hours from where I live in BC Canada. She has a real heart for people and her songs are just great. Her and a group of them at one time would pick a psalm to all read and pray for inspiration and then they would meet in the city the next day and just start singing and worshiping having nothing planned. God moved in mighty ways! She has 2 cd's strictly just taken out of the psalms. She has other cds that you can tell are so lead by the holy spirit. You can go to heatherclarkband.com to check it out.

What I am really sad about is that this current generation will probably not even recognize any of the songs we are talking about. My kids don't sing anything like them in Sunday School. All the stuff I sang as a kid, they don't even know. That's why I had our daughter come with us to the hymn sing. She actually enjoyed herself although she DID say that she only knew one song. The current trend that I see which might alleviate this, is that many old songs are now played on the radio with a more comtemporary style. This may be the only way many of these kids will hear these songs.

wow!! I like these hymns too. There are a lot of hymns that I like. What a Friend We have in Jesus, Trust and Obey, I would Be Like Jesus, Marching to Zion, I am Thine O Lord and many more. Those are some that We usually sing when we have our church service. I love to sing too and I joined our church choir. It is interesting and uplifting to be a part of the church worship. Have a nice day.

Does your church sing mostly hymns then? My parents church is very conservative and sings only songs from the Psalter Hymnal. Some churches like the more contemporary songs. I guess it is a matter of preference. Thanks!

Our church also does primarily contemporary Christian songs. And while I enjoy them, I miss doing some hymns now and again. I LOVE "How Great Thou Art", "It is Well With My Soul" (not sure that's the title tho), "Old Rugged Cross" and of course "Amazing Grace". I love the harmonies that you can do with these songs. I love the emotion that comes from them. Wouldn't want to do all hymns all the time, but I'd love to see more mixed in the list!

I think what could also work is putting hymns into a contemporary style. I hate to think that all the great words of these songs will be lost after this generation. Thanks:)

Like any type of music, some is good and some bad, and that's true with the old hymns. There are some that I really love for the beauty of the message and the melody. I like some of the contemporary Christian music, too; but it doesn't have the appeal for me that my favorite hymns have. It probably goes back to my childhood when that was all we sang. Some of my favorites are "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" (my sister has a CD of the Brigham Young Chorus singing this song and it's really powerful and beautiful), "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty," "The Church's One Foundation," and "Faith of Our Fathers."

we have a pretty contemporary worship service so we dont sing a whole lot of hymns (we sing mostly hillsong) but there are a few older hymns that i like and most of these hymns have been around for 100 years or more! my dad has a book on little short stories about the authors and the circumstances they were in when they wrote their particular hymn - facinating reading!

I have read one of those books about the hymns. When you see the inspiration behind the songs you can understand why so many of them have stood the test of time.

There are many for me, & i would like to list some 1. There shall be shower of blessings 2. To God be the glory 3. I need thee every 3. The lord is my shepherd etc..etc There are also many contemporary songs for praise & worship coming up which i really like, but as a personal choice i like more of Hyms cos sweet childhood memories are attached to it& i always cherish it ,in addition to worshiping God, as i grow up with regular church & sunday school.....

When I was 12 years old I walked into this church for midnight Mass one Christmas and the choir sang Handel's Halleleuhiah ( I can't get the word right here ) Chorus and it was magnificent. I've never forgotten it and have yearned for it ever since. Its the best ever if you do hear it.

Oh wow there are so many I'm not sure I can go with a favorite. Here goes my list: What A Day that Will Be, In The Sweet Forever, I'd Rather Be An Old TIme Christian, Standing On The Promises, Looking For A City I could go on an on. Another great worship is signing songs if you do a lot of contemporary. And the youth catches on to this amazingly fast. We do a combination of both but we just had our annual homecoming service this Sunday so all of these are fresh on my mind! God Bless!
