Do you think the rumors are true?

I was watching the news earlier and saw that many believe that there will be racial riots if Obama does not win this election. I am not asking this to be disrespectful nor to start any drama,it is soley a question. Do you really think this is possible, and why if so would something so silly happen?

Considering the sizes of his crowds, I'm guessing...no. While I acknowledge there's still rascism in this country, and there are still people who have a problem with an african american President I don't think there's enough of them in any given area to start a riot. It's possible this is naive of me, but I don't think so.

It is always possible, but I also don't think so. For people to start a riot, there usually has to be something that has occured that truly inflames their passions and creates anger. Now do the vast majority of people really care about politics, do they really care who gets elected? I know that many Mylotters here do but we are the politically engaged, that is not true for the vast majority of the population, so I guess there will be no riots

obviously you guys need to get out more and watch the news. black people always blame their problems on the better off white man. guranteed blacks will do something. i do not respect anyone who is a obama supporter. they would be terrible economists, because they think they will get an immediate benefit from him, and obviously do not care about their country at all, if they elect him. he will destroy the best country in the world

This is fear mongering by the media. In order for a threat like this to be effective there would need to be some kind of an incitement component in advance from someone with name recognition...little soundbites to keep the idea that people will actually follow through with the threat. A string of riots (because it would take more than just one to garner national attention) would have to be organized in advance and I haven't read or heard anything about it even with Election Day drawing close. People don't "take to the streets" unless they know they're expected to take to the streets. As other posters have already said, this isn't really about race since there are both supporters of Obama and supporters of McCain in the black community.

I don't know about riots but I've been reading (from other sites) where people think that if Obama loses it will be because of some "conspiracy" and that it's because he is black. Also, that if Obama wins and something bad happens during his term it will be because of the "white man" causing it to make Obama look bad. I've also read that people believe that if white people don't vote for Obama it's because he's black. I think it's pretty sad and pathetic that people are acting/saying these things.

What? I won't salute because it's taking side? The American flag stands for oppression? OMG! I hadn't read that. I knew he wouldn't wear the pin. That irks me even more! Do you know of a link to that? Just want to let others know who don't know about it.

I agree with you, honestly I don't like either Obama or Mccain when it comes to running the country. I would choose Mccain however because he is the lesser of two evils. What sealed the deal for me was when Obama made the comment as to why he does not salute the american flag,he said he didn't want to be percieved as someone who takes sides. Then he said to people in the world the American flag stands for opression.Considering every male in my family has served in the military to keep the freedoms that everyone shares safe in this country, a man who sees the American flag in such a way shouldn't be the president of America. That is just my opinion.

I don't think the other respondents realized you said "if Obama does NOT win this election." I think there is definitely a possibility of riots. There have already been many arrests by his followers who couldn't control themselves when protesting the RNC. He has many fanatical followers supporting him who may very well riot. Personally, I don't think it will happen, but it is possible.

I think it's unlikely for a few reasons - and could happen in one specific circumstance. After all, nothing is impossible. Despite the fact that there have been questions raised about racism in the campaigns, the issues aren't racial. Obama has widespread support among all races - and he hasn't played himself as 'a black candidate'. I'm not hearing a lot on the community level about getting a black man into the White House. If he's not elected, there will be some people who say he was defeated because of his color, but I don't see anything that points to widespread rioting. I can see it happening if we have a replay of the 2000 elections where the outcome is in question and people feel that the election is stolen from him.

Actually, it was Donna Brazille who brought up the potential for riots. Donna is a bigwig with the DNC. This was awhile ago and i am looking for the link. Most people believe it was a cheap attempt to frighten white people into voting for Obama. As anyone who regularly blogs knows, Obama bloggers are the rudest possible. Will that translate to wide spread rioting? Idk. I do know Obama recently told his supporters to "Get in their faces" when arguing for him. The speech is at youtube. That type of language is really incendiary imho. Add to that all the "If you don't vote for Obama you are a racist" charges being made, suddenly being bolstered by "polls" and you can see the potential for violence after he loses. What amazes me is the fact that Obama, who claimed he was bringing people together has done nothing to reduce possible tensions. He refuses to call his supporters to account for their behaviour and makes those "get in their faces" comments.

I won't vote for Obama because he is spineless and that is my opinion. It doesn't matter if hes blue, black, green or purple. I am not the one who is concerned with what color his skin is. He is though and his supporters and the people who make it an issue are the ones who have stirred the pot concerning race. When I say Obama has its obvious I shouldn't have to give a example but I will. His white grandmother? His white Uncle? Where is his Black family? Who is he trying to win over when introducing america only to his caucasian relatives? If I am a racist because I think this man is fame driven and not right to run this country based on him and not his skin color, then I am. And I am proud to be one too.

I just think that this did not begin as a election about race, but now it is.

Agreed. This whole race issue is a distraction from the fact that Obama has lied to his own party on Fisa and troop removal from Iraq. Thats how he won the nomination. If he had said he would vote for FISA and his real policy in Iraq , talk to the commanders then send the troops to Afghanistan, Hillary Clinton would have won hands down.

No i don't think so. If Obama doesn't win I'm sure there are still millions of Americans who supports the republic party. And currently America is in a sink or swim situation. So if ever Mc Cain wins, America has no choice but HOPE and support him that he could somehow bring back the American prosperity again. If the people start out riots, it won't do good to the country either and it will worsen the situation even more. Now to be honest I'm not a fan of John Mc Cain maybe because the Republicans already made a really really really bad impression everywhere! Especially with George Bush's great (sarcastic) decisions and the war in Iraq. But if ever Mc Cain wins, I think it will be very hard to bounce back in a grace period of time because the world just don't trust the republicans and its plans anymore! Lets be honest, George Bush blew it, the beautiful image of America is now tampered, now everybody thinks that Americans are war makers. And investors would be hesitant to invest more that would eventually boost the US economy that would eventually bounce back from debts. I think if Obama doesn't win his election, there won't be any riots. but I think it will take much time and a gazillion of efforts and strategies to bring the US economy alive again.
