I have an itnerview for a higher level post in the secretarial field today. However I am running from my supervisor because she behaves so badly with me and secondly she promised to get an increase in salary for me and she has not done so after several months.
Our department has two lawyers and myself giving secretarial support and doing all the administrative stuff.. I love my job but I am getting fed up with her finding fault no matter what I do and speakign down to me as if I am stupid!
When the matters come in - I start the investigation and respond to the person who sent us the matter and the legal officer signs. I have to log in every correspondence coming in and going out, files the same way plus creating new files for each new matter, - logging the matter in and assigning the matter a number. Guys it is technical and time consuming.
However she said on my performacne evaluation report that the filing system or organising of them needs to be done,. Now she never ever comes to my desk and ask about the system I have in place. I have always thought that the reason for a filing system was for the easy retrieval of files and information. Well I organised the files in alphabetical order and placed the names of each file on its respective hanging folder. Meaning that if you are looking for a matter in H you would look for the letter and the person's name and the file is retrieved. Then you place it back in its exact position (the folder has its name). This leaves no room for mis-filing but still whenever I am not at work they cannot find a file and I find everything on my desk as usual!
This week (Wednesday)she came to me and told me that she realised that I have the files in alphabetical order but not in the categories as she wanted them to be! I looked at this woman as if she was mad. I told her that she never explained to me the order she wanted but I have filed in the way I was taught bearing in mind that whenever I am not there someone else could easily find the files. She then began to explain to me that she told me but I did not remember. This woman is a liar! I never even knew that executive matters where actually court files. I thought they were executive because they came from the the Minister of Education, the Permanent Secretary or the Chief Education Officer. So I just told her that I am not going to re-organise the sytem becuse she was there when I was organising the cabinets and she never made clear her intentions regarding the filing. This is only the last item that caused me to change my mind about the job.
In my heart I dont want to leave because of the hands on experience and the fact that she will be going off to have baby will ease the strain too! Am I being too hard on her? Oh! She is much younger than I am and she had tha attitude with me from day one. Look not everyone is going to be supervisors! If there is no supervisee who will she supervise? Someone has to be at the lower level doing the work anyway and I love my job! No one ever complained of my performance before. As a matter of fact I am one of the top five secretary in the Ministry - Number one if a poll should be taken! I am a hard worker. I take my tasks seriously and follow up on eahc mattter to the last full stop.! Sometimes the lawyers on the other side answer as they hear my voice because they know me and give me a time and day when to call back if I have had no response. Sometimes they call me before I call them too!
Any advice?

You have to follow your gut on this one. You clearly seem to be unhappy and your supervisor is indeed terrible at her job. How long will she be out to have her baby? Does she plan to come back? Problem is that those women sometimes think they have to prove something. Hey, I'm a mother and I still can have a career. But they are so worried about being perceived as slacking of because of their child(ren) that they sometimes take it out on their 'underlings'. She just can't show any problems/faults. So you should be prepared for that, if she is that type of person.
Now, I would suggest to do the interview. If it is scheduled, those people get upset and hold a grudge, if you don't show up. But even if you are offered the job right away, you don't have to accept it right away. Ask for 24 hours or something to reconsider what is being offered.
Whether you are offered a new job or not, it's always good to keep yourself some options open. This way you know your self-worth career-wise. And it keeps you up-to-date on interviewing techniques.
If I were you, I would sit down and make a list of likes and dislikes at your job. Maybe your boss is terrible, but how are the rest of the people in the office, those you work with and/or interact with. Looks like you are otherwise highly appreciated. Begin networking, maybe you can move into another position or even be promoted. If you like the place you work at, there is still options to get away from a terrible boss. Just list pro and cons of your job, the work environment etc. Look at it just for a reality check. Maybe things are really as bad as you have laid them out here, maybe it's just because you are fed up right now but there are plenty of positive things that should keep you at your job. Keep that list handy, update it as needed, and compare it to each job offer pro and cons that you receive in the future.
Lastly, you can always hope and pray that you soon get a new supervisor;)

Thank you Jonesy. I have found alot of wisdom in your posting. I did attend the interview and based on their expressions I did well. I have decided after prayng alot on it that I will take the job (if it is offered to me) because there will also be a Legal department there. So either way I cant lose.
I wil take up ypur advice on the list and I think it will also be applicable to other aspects of my life.
Thanks again and God bless!
