How Far Would You Go?

I think pretty much all of us have seen dogs that aren't taken care of very well. How far would you go to help the dog? Several years ago there was this little Labrador Retriever puppy tied up outside someones house- I seen it everyday when I'd drive home. The area that he could "roam" was only a few feet, he was very thin and missing some hair, and I never once saw food/water outside with him.
On my days off I'd drive by at different times of the day and see if things had changed- maybe they only keep him out there to potty. All the times I drove by, the conditions hadn't changed.
So I took a walk over there to get a closer view. The dog could get about 2 feet from the sidewalk so I could see him VERY well. He was so thin it was sickening, and I did see a water bowl out there but it was a small cereal bowl and had been tipped over. As I was looking over this dog, I parted his hair and I've never seen so many fleas in my entire life. Just then a woman came outside and yelled at me for "bothering" her dog. I told her that he looked hungry, and she said that she didn't have money to buy food this week but she'd get him some next week. I told her that they cannot go that long without food, and he also needed to get those fleas off of him- she said "he's just going to have to learn to wait".
So, I left. I went home and made a few phone calls and found someone who would take him in. I went to that house in the middle of the night, got the puppy and took him to work and bathed him and fed him. Even though it was apparent that he'd been very neglected, he was the sweetest little puppy you could imagine. He went into his new home the next day and he's been a wonderful dog for their family.
With the condition that the puppy was in when I found him, I really don't believe he would have lived for much longer in that situation. I still drive by that house on my way home from work, and those people have never gotten another dog, which I believe is for the best.

I would have probably called authorities on her or done what you did but it can be awful seeing animals suffer like that. I hate seeing an animal suffer. I am glad that they didn't get another animal. They aren't the type to need one and also people get puppies because they are fun and loving and then the newness wears off and then it isn't so fun for them when they realize the responsibility of taking care of a animal.

It was many years ago that I asked the owners of an adult Afgan Hound if I could take him of their hands as he was not being looked after properly. They left him tied up in the heat with no water all day ,his coat was just clumps of matted hair which was the first thing I fixed when I got him ,I had already given him water over the few days before I had him .The former owners left that day and I found out why he was tied up all day but it was still no excuse to have him in the state he was in. He ended up getting a good home with a lady who had a female Afgan and wanted to breed from him. She knew about his little habit of running away as soon as you took your eyes of him he was gone and said it would not matter,so everyone happy.

Good for you, it is good to hear. I used to drive through the indian reserve on the way home and there was this one house that had a cage and about 4 dogs locked in it day after day. We never saw them getting any attention or love. I was really tempted to take the dogs and find them homes but then one day on the way home we noticed the cage was empty and the dogs gone. I never knew what happened to those dogs and I feel bad I didn't act sooner. I like to beleive they have good homes now but I somehow doubt it. I am sure glad that you helped that dog, the world needs more people like you.

^_^I'm very glad you took him you sound like an amazing person, I'm sure there were many other people that saw him everyday and wanted to do something. I can't stand to see animals mistreated, I probably would have done the same thing in your situation, I don't even know why people get pets if there just going to keep them locked up and neglect them?

I think it was great that you took action but I'm not sure I would have done that in this day and age. Stealing someone's dog is against the law. I happen to know the dog warden where we live so I probably would have called him with my complaint or else tried to buy the dog from the woman. I have turned in some people for neglect on dogs, cattle, and horses.
