How to choose a forum software?

Hi, maybe I'll have to convert a Snitz database to a new free forum software. What do you think is the best I could choose? PhpBB3 has lot of tools and I'd like something like it (more then phpBB2) but it seems a bit complicated to convert the Snitz database. I guess I should go to phpBB2 and then to phpBB3... Maybe is there something else that works good like phpBB3 and has less problem converting from a Snitz forum? I'd like a forum where I can add scripts and maybe also create a portal.
