That Don't Make No Sense

Yesterday, in one of my responses, I typed a phrase that I have not used in years. I sat there and looked at it, wondering where it came from. I mean, I knew I did it, I just wondered where the phrase came from, how it started. Then, I started thinking about all the phrases or words I grew up hearing, and wondering how they got started, and what people in different parts of the country say that some of us may find odd. The phrase I used was Sure as Shootin. I know what this means, but how did it come to be used this way? When I was younger, I was always saying to my little brothers, Boy, you're just eat plumb up with the dumba$$! Or, Boy, did your mama beat you with the dumb stick? And, any Texan can tell you, there is a difference in fixin and fixing. If we are "fixin ta do somethin", we are going to, or are getting ready to do something. Fixing is what you do to fences, screen doors, a flat tire, etc. Ha! Bettcha didn't know that, didja? Now, I would like to hear from ya'll. Tell me some of the words or phrases that you grew up hearing that just "don't make no sense", now that you are grown. Do you still use any of them?

Hey Bo, I'm bettin you just opened a can of worms. Do you know that one? This should be quite an interesting discussion. When we were little I remember my mom saying so many phrases, like When we wanted something we couldn't have, she would say, yea and people in hell want ice water too. If given time I could come up with a mess of them but instead I'll just read the other responses. Maybe I'll be back with more later. leenie

*LOL* Seems like we are all having the same problem. I did the same myself and I started the silly discussion! Please do come back and give us a few, if you remember them. Thanks, sunshine.

As I was growing up my Mom always said, "kill them with kindness." Or another favorite of hers is,"the grass is always greener on the other side." Or there is a silver lining to every cloud. A rolling stone gathers no moss. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. These are popular ones and my Mom made good use of them.
