When i was a kid my mom would make dinner and we were told not to waste anything on our plates because there are kids and people out there that didn't have food to eat and im sure some of you where told the same thing, and now that im an adult if by chance something gets wasted i do feel a little bit guilty but of curse i try not to waste food but sometimes it cant be helped but anyway now when i see kids waste food i cant help but think about what my mom use to say and about how some kids are less fortunate, so how do you feel do you feel guilty when food gets wasted?

Yes, I will feel guilty to it. As you know, there are many people are still starving everyday. It will be a shame for us to waste the food. I try to finish the food and don't want to leave it. I teach it to my child, too. It's a good virtue.

Absolutely! When I was a kid, I had a smart mouth and used to say "well, then let's send the food to those poor children". But now that I'm grown up, I can understand this - thinking of how hard I worked to earn money to buy that food - makes me uncomfortable leaving anything on the table. And what's with people who NEVER take anything home in a doggie bag at a restaurant?

Yes i totally understand but there only thing is when i was a kid my mom would tell me about those less fortunate but sometime she would tell me that just as she was about to serve a dish i didn't like lol, but now that im older i can appreciate her for that becuse she was really giving me a lesion in not taking things for grated and that you dont always get what you expect in life, and those lesions stayed with me.

i feel guilty when some food are not eaten specially if it one expensive food. but i try to cook only that i can eat. so i make sure only small quantity that i am going to cook to save money and to stop having too much garbage. and yes there are so many starving children around and we feel that we have to be responsible with the food that we waste considering there are so many people who will like to be in our position.

I do alot of times. That's why I always try to eat all the food that was served in the dish. I think that's the reason I am a bit overweight xD!
Anyways, what people always tell me. Not to waste food, because there are kids out there that would do anything just for a piece of what you are eating. And there you are, just not giving a crap and throwing it to the garbage, because it doesn't taste good, or another excuse that could be considered... err not worth throwing it away I guess.

I used to feel really guilty about wasting food , and I think its probably because of similar reasons . lately I haven't felt so guilty about it. If I am craving something then most likely there is some reason I need to eat. If I just can not eat anymore well then I just cant eat anymore. I will try to save it in the fridge if theres left overs and such . Yet I cant feel horrible every time I throw something out . Consumption is a need , and unfortunately its wasteful . There isn't a real way to monitor that other than maybe making less or trying to store it . If you do really worry about other children and homeless maybe helping a charitable cause might help , like volunteering , but please do not look at yourself as a bad person because you worry about others . That's a good quality imo. :p

Yes, I feel guilty, if I waste food! All of us know that for a hungry man, food is God! So caring for food at any circumstance must be our top priority and we should not waste any quantity of food, even in grains! Also we should advise our youngers always not to waste food, as our elders had advised us years before.
Food saved from wastage is the same as food earned. We must remember this every time!
Thanks for this nice discussion!

My mother always taught us not to waste food and that is how I do it. I try to teach my kids the same thing but sometimes they are just too picky and I cannot force them to eat what they don't like so we always prepare something they would finish without being told.

I always try to eat the last grain. True! otherwise, I feel guilty. Even at the middle of top problems, I feel frustrated when someone waste food. I am the scavenger in my family I can say !
I eat from the plate of my daughter arya, whatever she leftout in her plate. I do cleanout the plate of my wife too, because of this attitude. For this reason when we start dining, I take very little food at first and wait for others to complete. I know, there will be always something waiting for me.
my mother inherited this habbit as I have seen her doing from my brother's plate in the childhood. I know when we talk about hygeine, theese habbits may come under question.
My feeling is that there are lot of others who even don't get a one time food and wasting food is a crime we do.
Told the truth inside our home !! No probs, just sharing our views with friends in myLot. Happy myLotting!

Hi ya apples99
I am sure my mum used to say this too or maybe it was the school dinner ladies I can't remember it was such a long time ago for me!! . I don't feel too guilty these days as I give to charity on a regular basis and also donate stuff to various charities when I can. I don't usually cook more than I think we will eat though that is not always possible!!

I have this aunt who doesn't like her family wasting food. And whenever we visits her family we are always also told to not waste any food. Whenever we're at her house we really have to get food that we know we could finish or else we'll get in trouble and get scolded by her. And whenever we see that her children can't finish some of their food, she then gather's it all and finish it herself. I think it's one of her secrets for getting rich. To not waste any food means not wasting money.

When I was a kid, my aunt taught me on how important each grain of rice is, so every dinner, my cousins and I have to consume all of the rice in our plate. I do feel guilty every time I have some left overs because I know how hard it is to farm, I could imagine each farmer under a hot hot sun and then some typhoons come and wash their plants away, it is sad. I feel lucky thinking I am well feed because there are lots of kids around the world who are hungry and are eating garbage.

Definitely yes. Most people would have the same experience where parents told them not to waste food when they were young and I am not an exception too. However there are times when illnesses that cause a loss in appetite that cause us to waste food. That cannot be helped.

Oh yes infact I got into a heated discussion just the other week, a friend took me to a restaurant that he was raving about for some time, I ordered the fish and chips, well out came this huge plate with three large fillets of fish salad and chips and I said i am not going to be able to eat all of that and and waiter who was the owner of the restaurant said oh just eat the fish the rest is only filling for the plate, most people just eat the main part...so I said to my friend , me being a deep thinker and all, we are paying for most of our meal to be thrown in the bin, I said why can't restaurants have two sizes of meals, small and large, the answer was it loos better to serve up a big meal, well I think that is such a waste so when my friend took me back there all I ordered was garlic bread and an entree and that is what i will be doing at every restaurant now that serves large meals and i will be telling them why...waste waste waste.....lilaclady steps off her soapbox...

As a matter of fact, I do, I was just thinking about this the other day. I had made some soup, ate some and put the rest in the fridge. A couple days later I realized I just didn't want more of it, I was in the mood for soup but I wanted to start with fresh soup I had just bought. I avoided throwing out the soup in the fridge though, and remembered it had been slightly stale (it was boxed noodle soup), so that became my "excuse" to throw it out. Then I thought, wow, I need an EXCUSE to throw it out, it was like a 99 cent box of soup, what's the big deal? I actually gave it to the dog, that's the thing that's a little better and less wasteful I do with food than just throwing it out!

Same here. i was also told by my mother not to waste food since there are other people wh can't even have a decent meal. When I was young I never felt guilty since I thought at that time that I really can't eat the food anymore. But now that I have grown up and have seen the world and saw those who really are less fortunate, I finish my food and not waste it. I even tell my friends and officemates who wants to throw their leftovers that some people are starving so let's not waste it. It's better to donate or should I say give the leftovers to street children and the less privilaged ones.

It drives me insane for people to waste food. And my son started a job at a fast food restaraunt this past summer and he was appaled at the amount of food wasted. I was proud of him that it bothered him as a teenager but after listening to him it is just plain sickening at the amount of food thrown away daily at these restaraunts. Surely they could gauge the amount they need to prepare better than they do. I bet they threw out 4 big garbage cans full a day. And employees pack it home from there in groves. Crazy!

I know how you feel i have a friend that works in a fast food restaurant and she tells my all the time about how they throw food away and half of the food is still good i think its just rediculase to throw food away like that, why dont they just let the employees take some of it home i mean it dosent make since to throw a way perfectly good food when there are so many people out there who could use some extra meals.
