Do you think a Mars mission should have happened already?

It's 2008 and we still haven't landed on Mars.... because the economy sucks big time! A huge thanks to Bush and his "war/conquest". I think he just delayed the mission by another decade or two. This mission is vital to our species, we need to get off this planet and start exploring others, its one of the first small steps to colonization, we'll be doomed if we stay on this rock forever. Anyone else?
