I have just washed my hair for the first time in a week!! Yeah true, and you know what it felt absolutely fantastic and my hair is really in good condition! Why, you might wonder have I left it so long, well it was like this. When I last had my hair cut I was talking to the hairdresser about the condition of my hair, with so much dying and colouring my hair has dried out and gone quite frizzy and in poor condition. I have tried every shampoo and product under the sun and nothing has worked. My hairdresser said to me to try and just wash my hair once a week, why? Well simply because when I am washing my hair, I am washing any natural oils out of it so there is no chance for repair, but to leave my hair means that I get the natural oils coming out. Of course the natural oils make the hair look greasy but what I had to do was each day touch my hair to stimulate the oils in it at the top and then brush it regular to get the oils to come down the hair, I have done this and I am already seeing a difference in the feel and look of my hair. So, for the time being I am just going to wash it once a week until I get the condition back in my hair! If someone said to you just wash your hair once a week would you do it or are you one that has to wash your hair all the time to feel clean?

occaisionally to do this is really kinda good for yer hair. but dont make a habit of it for long term. those oils may repair the actual hair itself when it gets over damaged.. but they do a number on yer scalp that will take a very long time to reverse if at all. dandruff, clogged pores and deadened folicles and the like.. will have yer hair falling out in clumps and peices of yer flesh coming off, and i dont think thats really the look yer goin for

No way! I always thought they polished em or something! I will try baby shampoo actually, I think that is the only shampoo I have not tried!

hehe do it very 3 or 4 months or so and itll keep yer hair better conditioned.. but on a normal, use a gentle shampoo if you have a problem with dryness (go with the baby shampoos, theyre the most mild) and wash yer hair every other day. the reason why bald mens heads are all shiny? is because more often than not.. they lost their hair from clogged folicles, and that sheen, is alla the oils that have left a hardened waxy type residue along their scalp.

When I think back to when we wer kids bath and hairwash night was a Sunday evening so we were all clean and ready for school Monday morning so it was a once a week thing. These days most parents bath and wash daily, I wonder if that is the reason more kiddies suffer with skin problems as their natural boy oils are getting washed away too. I usually wash my hair most days in the morning but from now on I will try to wash once a week and just dampen any sticky out bits in the mornings instead and see how I get on. Huggles. Ellie :D

Yes you are right, it was not once a week when I was a kid but I remember hearing relations talk of it. I do think personally that to many people are too clean and you know it does wash their natural body oils away. Now two of my kids were born with exzcema, they get it from me now if I bath too much or I am in water too much it sets my skin off, so working on this principal I would hardly bath them if they had a bad episode. So I was reading up on exzcema and I read somewhere that bathing was a good thing as the water soothed the exzcema and replaced lost moisture, now this confused me a bit, maybe I was doing it wrong. So I started upping their amount of baths a week, and my daughter would be in it five mins and her skin would go all blotchy and red and she would start to scratch and basically her skin would erupt. So for me too many baths are not good for them, but one or two can help keep the skin moist to a certain degree. It is hard and I often hear other parents going on about how they bath every night, and they bath their kids every night and I think "gosh they were think we were minging if I said we did not bath every night"!!!

I figured you had misplaced your head. I have to wash my hair everyday, if not I turn into a total scuzball. I would be sliding out of the bed on it at night and could not stand to even see it without looking for bugs. I had brain surgery a few years back, and the hair that was left, got washed at least 2 or 3 times a week, I went to the hair dresser to do since the incision had to stay dry.

Wow! I didn't know you had Brain Surgery! As for me, I just feel it is healthier to leave at least a day or two between washings! ~Heavens~

Wow, brain surgery, that sounds horrible, I hope that it was nothing serious and that you are OK now.

Hi gemini, I am doing that often also..SO, it's not new to me..LOL! I used to have a "relax or straightening" of my hair once a year in my Country since it is very affordable, it makes my hair looks very great but the side effect is bad, makes it dry if I will not apply conditioner everyday..SO, what I did, I will not washed it often only twice a week and then night time, I will stroke it 100-150 times and very effective really..It helps us to gain back the natural oil of our hair! My problem this time is that, applying conditioner often give me a lot of dandruff so as much as I don't like to wash my hair everyday, I am forced too!

Mine is not, I have very little natural oils in it through all the things I have done to it, so I have to leave it a little longer.

I didn't wash my hair for a week when i was ill, and i have to say it felt a lot better afterwards! I know washing hair constantly strips it of all the natural oils but i find it really difficult not to wash it at least once every other day, i find that if i don't wash my hair that often i don't feel as though i am clean, even though i have showered at least once daily! I know it's silly really but i suppose it's just one of my little things that i do! I try to use good conditioners on my hair as it has been bleached to within an inch of it's life and they do help but i'm sure it'd be a lot better if i didn't keep washing it so often!! lol xx

I also have bleached and coloured a lot, hence the sad state my hair is in now! I am not sure I can do it all the time though, not washing for a week its really hard!

That's not disgusting at all. It's not technically good to was hair everyday because you wash out the natural oils.. i wash mine every 3 days and i condition everyday. a boyfriend i had a long time ago explained to me the whole "natural oils" thing, because he wouldn't wash his hair everyday and i thought it was gross. lol

I actually haven't been washing my hair every second day like I use to. Now that I use a straightening iron on my hair, I wash every 4-5 days so it lasts longer LOL My hair is long (midway down my back) and it's a pain in the butt to have to wash and straighten it daily. It takes almost 45 mins for me to do my hair. I was also told by my hairdresser when I last got it relaxed to wash it once a week or every 4-5 days and not daily.

things we will do for our crowning glory. if that's the only way to get my hair back to health, i'd do it too! it's true that washing our hair strip it of the natural oil. an alternative you want to consider is applying olive oil on your hair. after you wash your hair, towel dry and apply olive oil evenly on your hair. it replaces the natural oil stripped by the washing. personally i only wash my hair every other day so that my hair doesn't dry out. cheers ;p

I've haven't washed my hair on a daily basis since I was in school. To be honest I no longer shower on a daily basis, it's usually every other day. Some days I'm in no mood to wash my hair, so if I shower I'll skip the hair. Too much bathing is not good for anyone or anything. Showering daily dries my skin out, even though I use a good body wash. I don't like to waste time with lotions, so instead I just skip showering daily. I rarely go out of the house much anyways, so not a huge deal, lol.

I find that having a bath (no shower) does that too me, my kids suffer too if they are bathed too much too.
20 Sep 08
I'm impressed!! I don't think I could have done that (even though I probably should) - I have to wash my hair every day and can't stand having greasy hair. How did you cope? I think I would have hidden in the house for the duration! lol How long do you think it will take till the condition improves? Hopefully not too long hey? Violetdreams

It really depends on the person. I can not go more then 3 days without washing my hair. Of course that does not mean I do not take a shower. I have a shower cap. It does work but everyone should talk to their hair dresser first and see what time frame they should do. Mine told me wash it every other day.

I am one of those that has to wash my hair at least every other day or so. I cannot stand for my hair to look or feel dirty or unfresh or clean. I also get bed head sometimes too when I am sleeping LOL and the only way for me to fix that, is to wash it. I have very thick hair.

I would certainly attempt to do it. Problem for me my hair would look disgusting if I didn't was it at least every 2nd day. But I agree with the hair dresser. Today, for me, I can't seem to find a shampoo mild enough that doesn't strip all the oils. My scalp dries out now. I've started gym work again and hopefully a good amount of exercise will me. Not so much because of the sweat but, yeah I guess sweat and oil will help.

I was told by a hairdresser back when I was in High School that it was not healthy to wash it every day and so I would wash it every other day...three times a week and now with my boy the way he is I am actually down to once a week...I'm not shocked at what you have said! I do believe that you should not wash every day...it's healthier to wait a day or two between washings! ~Heavens~

my mom was a hairdresser and she always said the same thing. When I was younger it was very very tough because my hair was very oily. I had to sneak to wash my hair just to feel clean. now that I'm older and the oil is not so abundant, I see the benefits. I usually only shampoo about twice a week. It does work. My hair never looks dirty. In fact I get compliments on my hair.

My hair was really oily as a child too, but I can see how I have lost it over the years, but you know since I have left it a week and washed it on saturday I already have oils again in it so maybe it has done something. I think I will go to twice a week though now.

My sister is a hairdresser and she has told me this years ago. She only washes her own hair once a week but she does wet it and style it inbetween. She just doesn't shampoo it. She also puts leave in conditioner when she wets it. So I have gone many times with only washing my hair once a week. But when I am working I won't let it go that long because I am in the public and it just would do. But if I am off work for a week, lets say, then I will leave it as long as I can, as long as no one is going to see me, no one that is important, like one of my clients. I am glad it is working for you. It shouldn't take too long and you will be able to wash it twice a week. Alrighty then, talk to you later my friend, Have a good mylotting day, Chris

Agreed it is far beetr to leave your hair for a good time in between washes, but that is if you can stand it feeling greasy and unkempt lol my hair seems to fell uck after a couple of days,it is bunged up with hairspray and other gels ,and it just feels like a lump of lard on my head, its quite long now and on the surface it appears ok, but when you lift the hair it just looks all greasy.I know if you colour your hair that it can take all of the condition out of it,I put streaks into mine, blone ones, and although they looked fine,it did in fact make the hair feel a bit like straw. They always say that its better to leave the natural oils in there ,and to give it a darn good brush everyday to stimulate and release the natural iols, but its more than I can stand, the chip pan hair!

Well she told me to keep away from sprays and stuff as well, I must admit the amount of grease on it was amazing, the brushing and touching of my hair really brought it out. I think I will do it another week or two and see what it is like and then put it up to two times a week because it was really horrible feeling.
