almost every time my cat uses the litter box, she will come out and then proceed to drag her behind across the carpet. it's disgusting and i don't know why she does this or if i can make her stop. i have heard it could be an indicator of worms? does anyone have any suggestions?

Worms can be contracted by eating the fleas and from catching and eating mice. You can have mice enter your home through tiny holes in the construction, or even under a door. If a mouse can get its head through the space the body seems to squish down to follow. Also, cats can pass worms on to each other! As everyone has said worms can be passed on not only to other cats in the house but also your children. Dogs exhibit the same butt dragging after they poop because of worms. Even inside cats can get worms (I have had to worm my cats and they are totally inside cats). So, go to your vet and get the situation taken care of, and if you have other cats, make sure to worm them too as more than likely they have the parasites too.

I have always heard this means a cat has worms as well . One way to check and make sure is to check her kitty litter . I know this sounds gross but you will be able to see in the kitty litter if she has worms or not . Usually cats that catch and eat mice will end up with worms . The treatment for this is relatively cheap and if you just wanted to treat her to be on the safe side it would not hurt her . If your cat has worms you can pick these up from your pet . I had a friend who had a little one who always had worms and when she finally asked the doctor what was causing this , she was asked if they had a cat or a dog because often they are picked up from our very own pets . Best of luck

My kitten has never been outside but he got tape worms from swallowing a flea. He was doing that rubbing his butt on the floor thing too. I treated him and he's fine now. No more butt carpet riding!

fatmansmommy your cat is probably itching at the rectum, and it could be worms or constipation. go to your vet and get this'checked for your cat's sake.

Bring in a stool sample from you cat. If it's not worms put a rug by the litter box so she can rub her butt on the rug instead of the carpet. In other words, if it's not worms it's a behavior trait and if you try to change it you might end up with a even more distressing behavior.

Yes it is very most likely to be worms , it could be the earliest signs of it , but if you have long hair it could be this too . I have had to chase my poor lil babies around the house to get a piece of attached hair from them , and I have caught them scooting across the floor at this time also . Yeah but is true one or two lil pills and its done . Advice on pilling the cat eighter mix it in with a special pilling treat or have another person hold them because most likely the cat will be fIne and you will end up bleeding.

As I said above, I have a kitten who got tapes from a flea and I bought some tape worm meds from a pet store (They are real meds not the Hartz junk) and one pill got rid of the worms. However, cats often are very neat to the point of obsession and your cat may just really want to be sure she/he is all clean in that area. Sounds nuts but I have had cats all my life and worked for a vet and saw this all the time. Sometimes when they scoot, it is tapes and they are easily treatable with just one pill. Other times, it is just a hygiene thing which is obviously harder to deal with. I would put a rug down as someone mentioned and let the cat do its thing. Of course, a vet's visit is in order to test for any issues that need treating. I saw the tape worms so I knew instantly what the issue was and got the meds that day. They completely took care of the problem. The cat's stool will show if it has tape worms. Look for little pieces of rice...that moves. Gross but that's what tapes look like. The pills devolve the worm and end the problem. Good luck!

Please bring the cat to the vet. I would be afraid to use an over-the-counter dewormer. With all the bad stuff out there, I would be afraid it would hurt my cat. I know Hartz flea collars are dangerous for them. When she's at the vet, try to get her spayed if she's not already. She will be a much healthier cat if you can do this for her. Thank you for adopting her. I'm sure she is lucky and has a wonderful home.

sounds like worms to me. You may be able to find dewormer at the store. Otherwise, take her to the vet.
