How safe are we in our homes?

How safe do you feel in your home? Have you ever wondered something like this could really happen to you and your loved ones? Has anyone ever heard of a BUMP KEY?
Well lets start what you need to make a bump key.
1. A blank key. You may obtain blank keys from places like Wal-mart, your local hardware store or a lock smith. Pleace ensure that it is the proper form for the you will be bumping. Each company creates their own keyway for their locks, so a Weiser blank will not work in a Kwikset lock. You may also use an old key but if there is a deeper cut in the pattern, it may make this method more difficult.
2. A deadbolt lock. You can use the one off your door, if you wish but caution that you will be disassembling it entirely. Either ensure that you are very detail oriented or just go spend a few bucks on a deadbolt.
3. A triangular file. It is possible to use a square but a triangular works much better as it will create a more aggressive angle in the key notches.
4. A thin pointed file. This will be used to insert into the pinholes so it needs to be very thin and circular. Most hobby sets have one. You can use just about anything but it needs to be able to scratch and mark the blank key.
5. Needle nose pliers very small flathead screwdrive other miscellanous household tools.
Now here is a video showing how to make a bump key and how it works.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwTVBWCijEQ
Now after seeing this how safe do you feel in your home? What do you think of this logic that it actually does work? Does this bother you that it is splattered across Youtube and someone can actually get into your home? Are you going to take any other precautions to keep people out?

its natural to feel safe in your home. however it couldent be further from the truth. home invasions are very prevalent where i live, try not to let my gaurd down but things happen and i really dont think there is much we as a people can do about it, if somone is determined enough to get in your house their going to get in one way or another. its sick but its true.

So very true. If they wanna get in they will find away unless you are some security freak that has lasers, fences, gates, suvilence, bars on your windows and knowing that no one can get in will be their best bet. But if you donèt have the money to do this I guess you are just SOL.

Most places don't have a war going on. But that is beside the point here. If a theif wants in they will find a way in.

That didn't happen through the entire country there. And secondily it doesn't matter where you live something will happen. Whether it be hurricanes, floods, high winds, volcanos etc. Now we all have a choice. We chose to live where things like this can happen. Now we can never escape things so you just choose what you want.

Hi nichole,
Thanks for spreading the directions and where to find out the how. A few people might not have seen it on youtube. Just teasing. I'm afreaid that no matter how cautious you are, if someone wants to get into your house they will find a way. I take all precautions possible but still don't feel safe from the criminals at large. People like my sister that lives in a high risk neighborhood takes safety for granted. You can never be too cautious. I have pepper spray that I carry with me. Last night I took it out ready to use it, because I didn't feel safe in the parking lot I was walking to my car in. You have to be on guard and alert always.

The sad thing that it is all over the net and on TV. why do these people (like cops and experts) show these on TV and make these things up? Are they that dumb? Do they think that it will lower crime rate? They are sadly mistaken to say the least. I know there is so many people that take things for granted and honestly they are the ones that are going to be paying for stupid things. We have a neighbour that carries this high pitch squeeling thing and let me tell ya it will definatly get peoples attention. We are happy that she does take this percaution and she is being aware of her surroundings.

That's one thing alot of us forget to do. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. If we were all aware of what was going on I think we would be alot safer in this world.

Hello mylotting friends!!! I think thant we are not always safe in our houses. This doesn't depend on us of course. We here a lot of stories everyday about people being robbed or even hurt and killed in their own homes. Let's pray that we will never be one of them. Happy mylotting.
Good day my friends!!!!

That is so very true. If someone wants into your home or anything for that matter they will eventually find a way in. No matter what it takes it always happens. I remember seeing it on TV as well and I beleive that it was 20/20 or some CNN or something. Thanks TYC for your comment.

Unless someone is going to make it for their own house I can't imagine someone going to all the trouble to do it...The person would have to spend quite a bit of time to get this done....
He says you should do it with the door open incase it doesn't work then you can take the lock apart...so who is going to take this much time to do this..In someone else's house..
Maybe I'm just not understanding it...It would be alot more work than it is worth..

If someone sees something in your house that they want they are going to go about everyway about getting that item etc. However in the video he does show that incase it doesn't work leave the door open. He is telling you that because you should practice before you go and do it and working on your own door is a good practice job. However is a person who is breaking into your home even going to care if he damages your property no they won't. They want what the want and that is it.

Is there any place here on earth that is really safe? I don't think there is. Because accidents happen even at homes. So I don't think our homes is safe.

No I don't think you are safe anywhere. There is always going to be someone out there that will ruin things and it doesn't matter where it be. Whether it's your home or if your in church or a grocery store.

Yes it is very sad littleowl that these people who are doing these shows are cops and experts. What are they trying to do here? I remember there was an x-cop who started some show and was showing how to pop off "the club" I was like what and you tell us we have to have all these saftey devices on and you go ahead and show everyone and the world how to do this? They are pretty dumb if you ask me.

nicholejade i feel very safe in my house, but then
we live in a gated c ommunity so that helps too. And too
i dont think everyone could make that bump key either,
so am not a bit worried about it at all. we have a deadbolt
and an ordinary lock both so am very satisfied about'
our safety.

Just remember that because you are in a gated community doesn't mean that if they wanna get in they will find a way in. Theys always do. No not everyone is going to be able to master this on the first try but it's called practice and if you do it enough you will turn into a pro. Keep in mind that just because you have a deadbolt and an ordinary lock they can still get in. It's not hard if you really think about it.

i felt a lot more safer in our new home rather than in our old home because here we have strict guards inside our village who roams around at night. but of course you still can't be sure with who you are with in your house just for example having helpers who can do inside job. things like that. there are minimal instances that this has happened inside the village.

Just remember that even if you have strict guards even they miss things and if a person really wants to get into your neighbourhood or your house they will find a way and they will get in. I am happy that you feel safer in your new home.

Locks have always just been to keep honest people out. They have never stopped anyone that wanted to get into your house. You can buy a good pick set for a few dollars and it doesn't take much practice to learn how to use it real good. You can use it on just about any lock not just the house.

So very true that you can buy all the tools that you need to pick a lock and honestly it doesn't take much practice at all to learn how to do it as well. Slim jims work good on car doors if you know how to do it properly as well.

You are very welcome. Not that you have to run out and go get a bunch of locks but it is something to think about here. And yes from different producers would also deter as they will see that it is more trouble than what it is worth most times. But if there is something they really want in your home they will find a way in.

Lol that is too funny. I take that you sleep with a baseball bat beside you or under the bed? I have heard of people doing this but I have never personally tried it. However I do have a knife next to my bed in my night table. Don't really know why I have it there but it's there anyway. I think whoever broke into your house would be first taking a trip to the hospital and then to jail. Thanks for sharing.
