Will somebody be released from prison or jail if the offense they commit is not

illegal any more? Like when alcohol used to be illegal and someone got caught with alcohol they went to jail but when having alcohol became legal again do they get released or do they have to serve their time in prison or jail?

I think the issue is not the law that they broke, just that they broke the law. If someone commits a crime knowingly, but is excused when the crime was later repealed, they are still purposely acting against the will of the lawmakers. And that can become chaotic.

They have to finish serving their time because when the act was committed it was a crime...
