Helictites

Dragon helictite - From a certain angle, this particular cave formation resembles a dragon.

We went to Black Chasm Cavern today to visit the helictites. What are those? Cave formations, or speleotherms, that turn and twist into all kinds of unusual shapes. This cavern is famous for them. First we met Dad and Jane in Volcano, a little town with no volcano, for lunch, then we went and viewed the cavern (again - we've been there before). Then the kids went outside and panned for gemstones. Here is a picture of the famous dragon helictite with a bunch of other ones behind it. This cavern also has its very own arachnid (related to spiders) found nowhere else in the world. Ever visited a cave?

I've been to Mammoth Cave (very cool place) in Kentucky I believe. I was loving it all but was bummed after a while into the tour when you run into a full service snack/lunch bar. It kind of ruined the whole experience for me but it was still fun seeing all the stalagtyes (sp) and formations.
