What do you think of Filipino remakes? Lately, it seems to be the "in" thing to make Filipino versions of popular telenovelas/asianovelas? Both Kapuso and Kapamilya networks are into this craze with series like Marimar, My Name is Kim Sam Soon, Lalola, My Girl, Betty La Fea, etc.
I have really nothing against them. In fact enjoy watching them (especially the Kapuso shows). I was just wondering why it has become a sudden fad - buying franchises of these popular series to use in making our own version. Of course, it makes it easier for people to relate to the characters if they are played by local stars but, sometimes, I wonder if it doesn't call into question local networks' ability to produce unique, original shows. Even reality shows have their Filipino adaptations, like Pinoy Idol, Survivor Philippines (which was filmed in Thailand... what?), and Pinoy Big Brother. What does this say about local networks' creativity and sense of originality?
So, what do you think of this fad? How long will it last? Are you also a fan of these shows? Please, share do share your thoughts. =)

it's what they call "TRENDS". If that's the IN thing, well, for business purposes, it's just a great opportunity to venture into that "trending in tv" but of course it would really be great if we can also produce unique shows that will be a hit to the target audience.
Trends usually don't last long, after 3 years or less there will be another trend, so let's watch out for those new trends. For now, "remakes" can be alright but if and only if they can produce a much better version if not at least close to the original one.

Yes, I agree. If they can't produce remakes that are close to, if not better than the originals, I don't think that there's a point to making them at all since, no matter what they do, people will always compare remakes to the originals, at one point or another.

I think these networks should hire more creative writers. I think it's a case of not having more original stories to show to the viewing public. I dont have anything against remakes but the thing is most of them are not as good as the original. For example, kim sam soon. The original koreanovela is funnier than the filipino version. The story is also somewhat different. The same goes with My Girl. I find the Filipino version so corny and cheesy. But i liked the korean version so much.

*lol* Well, Filipino actors/actresses have this habit of trying a little too hard to imitate the character they are portraying to a "t", so much that it comes out as rather overdone - and, as you said, corny and cheesy. *lol*
My office mates seem to like them, however.

Almost everything on Philippine soap opera are remakes. I don't like watching those remakes. I just wonder why there's no originality concept there right now. I would rather watch Korean dramas instead.

i have nothing against "remakes." but the fact that tv networks cannot come up with something original and fresh makes me wonder why they can't produce distinctive and imaginative local tv shows. uhm...

I am not againts with the telenovelas that the 2 giant networkds are into because they just do it for the public to enjoy watching their fave stars on tv but I guess they should make their program more better and realistic for the viewers. thats all thnx

It shows only that they don't have orginality, and they don't have new ideas to come up with, that's why they do remakes, and the original story have been altered, i don't watch them actually, i always prefer the original one.

I’m not into “remakes” of these shows. I don’t watch these remakes shows. It maybe the trend these days but I think it will not lasts that long. Viewers may get tired of watching remakes of hit foreign shows in our local networks. Soon they want shows that are more unique and not just a remake of a foreign show.

I am not really against in remakes. But why is it we must do remakes? Why not make a concept that is original and new. I think writers should read more pocketbooks and find their story there, tagalog pocketbooks I think have good writers too. Maybe every week they should feature a writer and then show her novel, or book and make it into a telenovela. Well that's just my opinion, because sometimes in doing this remakes, we kinda know the endings of the story.

I think survivor Philippines was filmed in Thailand because it was under the terms and condition of the franchise. The original Survivor never filmed their show in the United States. It is quite sad that the Philippine networks are riding on the popularity of koreanovelas and the other series. I agree that they should create a home-grown series
