“I have to go to the bathroom!”

United States
September 22, 2008 1:24am CST
September 22, 2008 Why is it kids burst through the door and announce they have to relieve themselves while standing in front of the bathroom? Those five extra seconds of the “pee pee” dance are five seconds I can do without, are they waiting for me to tell them the toilet is broken or command that they go outside and find a tree? This is a daily occurrence with my kids, then they don’t follow up with the hand washing and they leave the light on. Humph!

My sister comes in running and says I gotta go pee while she is running down the hall. She also leaves the light on and sometimes forgets to wash her hands but I am always telling her to wash her hands and turn the light out when she tries to leave without do so.

I know, I'm the bathroom cop too, some people are going to be doing some community service in my bathroom.

I was like that when i was young... and i think it started when i learned to go to the bathroom by myself... but was too short to reach the light switch... so when i need to pee of do my stuff... i would announce that i need to go to the bathroom... that that was the que for someone taller than me to turn on the light switch... But then... even if i can do that by myself... i still made the announcement... and stopped only when my mother said that i don't need to tell the whole house that i need to pee... so i stopped...

and thus your dreams of a bathroom announcer were crushed.

Personally, I think this is something just that boys (and men), tend to do more than girls and women. It is like gee, if you need to go, go... you don't have to announce it to the world. Who is going to care if you are going to the restroom. The thing with hand washing might take a reminder though. Maybe you need to post a note in your bathroom asking "Did You Flush, and Wash Your Hands?"

I think it's a kid thing. Kids are used to having to report what they do to their parents, that this is a habit to them. "you don't have to announce it to the world, Dear" yet if a kid does certain things without telling their parents first, the parents will get on their case.

hi gitfiddleplayer I do think little boys bladders are wired differently or something as this happened to me a lot when my son was a kid. but he was really good about washing up after words and a fiend on turning off the light. he was the one to go around turning off lights when he was 7 even if you were still using them, gotta save lectricity he would yell.

Well my little girl does that and then some... She can come running into the living room when there is company over and cut the cheese and laugh. Then announce I farted mommy do ya smell it.And embarrassed I say no and I don't want too.Say excuse me.She replies well I want you to smell it.Not good at for a little girl huh!!!She can be anywhere and annouce to the world her business without a care in the world. And the little pee pee dance she has that down pat.Every time we go to a resturant or a store that is the first thing she does looking right at the bathroom. At home she can do the dance or roll around on the couch saying I gotta pee!!! I gotta pee!!!Must be a kid thing!!!

That is because they are kids. They also have no control and they have been too busy playing that they wait until the last minute. They also want to be sure no one will rush in before them. Oh you have to show them that they have to wash their hands because of some horrible germ will make them sick. And if they do not make a face so they will get the idea that it is to get rid of the smell even if it really does not.

I have one that uses the toilet the other is still in diapers and yes, she announces it. Probably because I announce it to them that that is where I am going. They always want to know where I am and when I am there, I want to be alone. I also want the oldest one to watch the youngest while I am indisposed. Oh, the hand washing issue. I see your hand washing issue and raise you a not flushing the toilet!

well, this little game wasn't as fun as I had hoped! Isn't amazing the conversation you have once you have kids! I was traveling with my sister once, she was hungry so we stopped late morning into a Denny's. The table next to us was full of gray hairs. They were talking about their BMs. We got out to the car and my sister said if she ever goes there, to shoot her! She was serious.

I have to wonder this myself, and my 3 grandkids are the same way. I just don't get it, maybe I will ask them why they do this. Can't wait to hear the answer.

Sometimes the way kids make and keep connections with their parents certainly are interesting on any given day, aren't they? LOL All I can add to this one is to cherish every moment watching the pee pee dance and reminding them to wash hands and flip off the light. They sound like an awfully lot of fun, gitfiddleplayer, yet I'm sure it can get pretty trying at times.

They are so much fun to watch though, other than the standard announcement that its bathroom time I never know what they are going to do, I don't think they know either.

With my kids, I'm so delighted that they are finally potty trained that I don't care that they announce their need to pee! What I don't like is when they wait so long to go that they pee on the floor in front of the toilet. Thankfully that doesn't happen with the oldest anymore, but my daughter still has an occasional accident. Thank goodness for paper towels and lysol. My kids love to wash their hands - I usually have to tell them to stop wasting water. As far as the light thing is concerned - they can't reach the switch, so when it gets dark I have to turn it on and off fo them.

maybe they do these things because they are still a little bit small. try to talk to them slowly and give them some rewards for every good thing they do. so that they will sure do things right....with children you have to act this way so that they learn to do things right

lol...my older one never did the 'pee pee' dance...but I have kids at school who do it. I guess it's because they can't really control it...and they think if they stand still in the same place for a few seconds they can stop the pee from coming out before they reach the toilet. Most kids wait till they can't hold it any longer to go running to the toilet.

My kids didn't stop long enough in front of the bathroom to do the dance, they just went straight to the bathroom but announcing where they were going and what they had to do. hahahaha The only time they did do the dance is if someone was in there before them.

My son used to do that, but now he just screams, "BATHROOOM" and runs across the house to get to the bathroom. He is really good about turning off the light, but he is terrible about washing his hands.

Well, if they don't wash their hands, you can be glad they leave the light on. That would mean lotsa germs on the light switch! Haha! I just started cleaning a preschool every weekend! I think of that everytime I clean the bathrooms...(with gloves on). I make sure I clean the light switches too! Maybe you could tell them instead of announcing that they have to go to the bathroom....tell them to yell "I washed my hands!" and "I'm turning the light off"!!

Hi there! I think kids tells their parents or any adult when they have to go because they feel they still need help or assistance. Maybe in taking off their clothes. And or course, while the parents are there with their kids helping them out they should guide them proper ways of bathroom etiquette. Until they don't forget and get used to doing it. Ciao!
