I reformatted my computer yesterday

Thanks so much for the suggestions in my other post on how to fix my computer but in the end I just had to start all over again. System restore would not work...all the restore points had already been destroyed. I did try one of the antivirus programs a lot of you suggested but all that did was detect a bogus antivirus program that couldn't be deleted...then the two programs fought with each other. One was trying to fix the problem, the other was trying to make it worse. AT one point one was claiming I had 2764 viruses while the other said I only had 2. So I spent yesterday putting everything back to factory specs! It runs so much better right now and myLot actually looks really nice. I couldn't contol my page sizes anymore...some would be really small, others could be read across the room...but now myLot is a nice normal size that doesn't look at all squashed or cluttered! The funny thng is, s/o wanted to do this 2 weeks ago but couldn't find some paper from our provider that he was sure we needed. He was just going to take it to a repair place if it got any worse. Well it got worse yesterday while he was gone so I just did it all myself. I knew we didn't need the paper...all that was on it was username and password and I memorized them. He was sure there was more to it than that and didn't listen to me. So, to make this a discussion...What was your worst computer problem? Did you fix it yourself? Do you memorize you usernames and passwords or would you be totally dependent on a piece of paper should you ever need them?

I hope that corrects everything for you. I do have a piece of paper with most of my usernames and passwords. My old computer that I had, I had to reformat about once every two months.

When it comes to software problem I always try to handle it myself. If it is a hardware problem I always ask a technician to take care of my pc. My usual problem was how to install a sound driver, until I learned how to do it the proper way.

I recently had to hunt down a hard drive that I cold upgrade to windows Vista because I had taken the hard drive out of my computer and misplaced it somehw somewhere in my house. Now I am back online but I was off for 4 days and just dropped a week of homework from my online college courses.

lol i've had a lot of computer problems in the past. I usually fixed them myself or had one of my many techie friends talk me through it or look at my computer themselves. I've learned a lot though from my computer troubles in the past and i think it's caused me to have less problems..because i've always learned something when i have a computer problem.. whether it be how to fix it or preventative measures.

There is nothing worse that having to reformat the computer. I had to do that many times already and so far there are only two reasons where I had to reformat. The first one is when the hard disk crashed or faulty. There is nothing much that we can do when this happens. We can try to recover the data and if we are lucky, we would be able to do that. Otherwise, if we have not done our backups, we would simply lose everything and that's about it. The second reason why we need to format was due to virus attack. We can try to clean up the virus by using the anti virus software but then there are some that refused to be cleaned and the only way to get rid of the virus is to reformat the hard disk. The most painful part when having to reformat is to reinstall all the drivers and programs that we used to have. I am quite a forgetful person and sometimes I could not even find the CD that came with the computer so that drivers and programs can be reinstalled. There are times that I had to download drivers from the internet and if you are unlucky, the drivers may no longer be available especially if you are using an older computer. Anyway, glad that you have resolved your problems and now you are back to posting! Cheers!

I can not remember what wrong with is now,but i fix it myself usually. Formatting hard drive is a very useful method long ago. Now hard-installed is my first choice.

I frequently debug, and run some scans, so I have not really had anything bad, other than the laptop is having issues. We believe we know what those issues are, we just cannot do anything about them just yet, like buy a new battery, and find a new power cord. I have had the habit for a year or so of keeping a tabbed book with all passwords for all my sites and everything written down. I call that book my brain. Woe is me if I fail to write down info like that, as I will tear my hair out trying to remember, or find it. If we cannot fix stuff ourselves, our usual first remedy is to ask the son to come help. We have not had to go further than that, yet.

Hi foxyfire, I am very dependent to my husband about computer problems..I haven't tried fixing by my own..I know it feels great when I can do it. Anyway, that was cool that you were guided by other members how to do it.. In my case about passwords, I need to be very sure and will write it down since I am using different password with different sites I am joining here!
