What are some items you can do when windows XP will not boot. and I dont want to see a format and re-install as that is the last item that should be done. This might give some with problems ideas to save them recovery time.

Why dont you take your windows xp boot disk and boot your system that way. it takes 2 minutes to try that and maybe a system restore than to reformat and re-install everything

Insert the XP CD installation disk and select the option in your pc BIOS and set the first botable drive to CDROM. Then save your BIOS configuration and let when the pc asks you whether you want to boot up from the CDROM, hit the space bar. Then after the CD finished running the installation program, select the Windows Repair option. This will brings you to a DOS screen after you hit a few keys. When the command prompt appears, type chkdsk c:

good answer if you read a lot of discussions here a lot would just reformat, and re-install. The point of this discussion is to show other options so that everyone is not reformatting and reinstalling

Reinstall an reformat is the easiest way out but it is very time consuming. I have tried this method twice and it sure saves me lots of time in getting my pc bootable. Sometimes we have this problem because we have power trip and also we have to force our pc to shutdown by switching off the power switch.

Thank you for responding and that is what I am looking for something other than a re-install.
