What kinds of things do you do occupy yourself or your family on long car trips?

I am not able to read in the car. I get car sick if I do. My son has also inherited this too. My husband and daughter love to read on trips!
Sometimes we play "20 questions" to kill time. Sometimes it's "I Spy". We often try to look for out or state license plates.
If I'm alone in the car, I like talk radio for longer trips. If I can find her, I like to listen to "Dr. Laura". I try to avoid political talk (just my preference). Many times, I enjoy complete silence on a trip by myself. It is a great opportunity to just THINK.
How about you? What do you do to fill the time on a long road trip?

I listen to my ipod music - I have a section I call driving music. It's my favorite songs, and the ones that are fun to sing to. Other than that, I like to snack! The kids like to watch videos and color and listen to their ipods too. I used to try to pack all sorts of fun things but I get carsick too so I can't pack anything that requires me to do very much. When I take medicine for it, I just get tired. If we are on a longer trip, I try to pack something special each time we cross a state line (something that has to do with that state, such as a food that is grown there). It gives them something to look forward to.

I like that idea of a reserved part of your iPod labeled "driving music."
I might try that out!

Cool idea about the state line "surprises".
When I met my husband I discovered that his family stopped for food a lot whereas my family "grazed across America" with the snacks we brought. That's what we do now. We bring our own snacks. It's my frugal Dutch ancestry!
Thanks:)

When we would take a long trip and the kids were little we would play the alphabet game. You find the alphabet on the signs as we passed them. You can only get one letter per sign and you had to use a different sign per person. We also played I'm going on a trip and taking what ever going down the alphabet and repeating every thing the last person named. Good to exercise the memory. Sometimes we would listen to audio books. I usually don't have control of the radio so have to listen to the drivers radio choice.

I prefer train to road for long journy where available. I used to travel to my home once in 40 days (yes I'm out of my family for my job). It is about 650 km and the journey starts at 11.30 in the morning and ends the next day morning about 7.00. During the day time I never left any scene through my window.
I enjoy the roads, bridges, trees, jungles, hills, evening sun, waters, people and all in front of my vision. I never sleep in day time especially during a journey. If you wish open your eyes, watch the world. You can learn a lot form watching. You can even encourage your son to watch and answer his questions.
At night I hang with my earphones.

That's a long trip! Where I live, commuter train travel is not an option. We only have freight trains and even those are rare. Americans are very much tied to their automobiles as many places are so far apart.
I too like to watch the scenery go by.
Thanks:)

Hello rocketj1
Well I am the one doing the driving so it is never a good idea for me to read especially as it too makes We have a big old sing song as my kids are only 3, 5 and 7. We often look out for trucks, minis and caravans to see who see's it first. Then when the youngest has fallen asleep the other 2 get their gamboys out. Then I get to listen to the news or something on the radio.

Uusally my husband and I play the alphabet game with the children where we start at the letter A and we see who is the first to spot something on the way that begine with the letter A , for example if someone saw an apple tree . My husband usually drives so either myself or one of the older children keeps score and at the end we total it to see who won . It is amazing how long it will take to get from A to Z :) It makes the time pass a little faster for the children and it prevents them from fighting with each other as much or asking " are we there yet ", every two minutes :)

There's only my husband and me for now. We are staying up north but when we go down south for a trip we would listen to music or messages through the car stereo or talk to each other. All kinds of stuff we will talk...some even jokes and nonsense and we would laugh.

Everyday, I would travel around one a half hour to reach my office and during those one and a half hour, I prefer not to talk with anyone. I am taking that time as an opportunity to read and meditate more on the Bible I'm happy I don't get car sick when reading. I find my morning devotion at home still too short so I want some continuation inside the bus. During longer trips like when we are going for vacation in far places I still enjoy doing some quiet time with God and I make it a point that all the others in the car are doing the same. The other remaining hours are spent by the children in playing with toys they usually brought along. The adults never run out of stories to share with one another and of course there are lots of food to share along the way.

I usually play the ABC game (find the letters of the alphabet from A to Z on signs and license plates but no where in the car) or the color game (I say one color, someone else says my color and adds their own color, someone else says the first two colors and add their own and so on). But if I am alone in the car I sing along with my CD's.
