Ok, things are really starting to get strange.

Have you ever had a conversation that contained the letter like in Instant messaging but the were spoken... I just heard about one.
She was saying the letters that we would type online...like OMG, LOL, BRB..
I think that this girl is online IM'ing way too much!!
Has this ever happened to you?? How did you handle it?

I do this sometimes. I caught myself when I first got on the internet and was into chat rooms I would actually speak TY instead of thank you. Now sometimes hubby and I will speak BRB, but we do it as if we're joking.

No it doesn't save time, but it seems to have come a trend. I hear the phrase "bff" or best friends forever said all the time. It's really just a trend right now that I'm sure will pass with time.
Gotta love teenagers, lol.

I can see joking about it. That is awesome!
I am just concerned about the kids that speak like this daily. We type like this online to save time. I do not see how it saves anytime speaking that way.

Lol, the new generation of people who were born into the IT age. I have heard of that being spoken more than once by too many young people. And being young myself, I could understand them perfectly well whenever they use these abbreviations. So, it is not too much of a problem for me to be listening to them talk this way.
However, I have never spoken in this way before as I find it just way too weird when we were to drop in abbreviations into our conversation rather than speaking it out the entire word. Lol.. that goes to show that I had not been IM-ing too much?
Basically, I would just treat it as a normal conversation and converse with the person normally. Lol, afterall what can we do about it? It had became like a habit for them, and habits are tough to break. Besides that, if we just let them converse with us in that manner, we can also keep ourselves updated on what are the new abbreviations that are being invented online. Kills two birds with one stone huh?
Haha happy mylotting and take care!!

I really do not see how it saves any time. to speak this way. I understand that it saves time when you type this way. Yes, I agree that it good to keep up on what they are doing. I guess I am just not seeing how it saves any time.

Err..? I did not mention that it would save time in speaking that way. but then, coming to think of it, if we do speak their language, it saves time in someway.. such that they do not have to pause and explain to us each time what they meant by a single abbreviation. Youngsters are just so weird.. Hmm..

Haha that is kind of funny when you think about it and yes I would have to say that when you start talking with letters in your daily life when talking to others that yes this person is on instant messaging to much . We learned how to talk many years ago and if one is going to revert back to letters because of the internet then they are on it way to much . I would probably make some sort of joke about how they need to go back to school if they have to talk with letters :)

I bet that your brother the Teacher has them speaking correctly. That would have top be nerve racking. the reason that we speak like that online is to save time and not have to type the whole thing out. I really do not see how it saves anytime while speaking.

I was going to say 'how funny', when honestly, it's pretty sad.
I do use LOL a LOT in the typewritten word, but I can't imagine using text-speak in the spoken word. What's the point? Aren't contractions good enough?

I agree that it is really sad. Lot of these kids are not learning to spell because of writing in abbreviations.

As the person who prompted this discussion I can say I was taken aback by the stream of abbreviations coming from this girl. In addition to the fact that I can't always follow the meaning i sometimes wonder if the kids even know what they are saying. do they mean the words they imply or do they just think the abbreviation is a standard response to somethings. omg would be the response I question most. Maybe they see it so much they think the letters are the response.
I saw an article recently in which a business education teacher lamented the fact that so many other teachers were allowing these text affectations to pass for actual writing. Her job was to teach business English and professional writing. Kids arrived in her class believing this behavior was acceptable because their teachers accepted it. She had to break the habits and explain why it was unacceptable in the real world. Some of her students were old enough to be working and had repeatedly lost out on job opportunities because of their texting habits overlapping into business writing. Slang terms and the languages we use with friends may be fine in our personal lives but kids need to learn when things are appropriate.
BTW(by the way)What is the deal with cell phone texting. Do these kids not realize they could simply dial and talk?????

All I know is I hate texting. I would rather type a letter or just talk on the phone then try to text.. I may be just getting old, I don't know.. But I am not a fan of it at all !

Yes, my oldest daughter does that from time. I can't stand that. I never let her do that. She just laughs and goes on. If it is not from IM it is from Text messaging. It is so irritating.

I agree, this is not the proper way to SPEAK! I do understand using it to save time online. But I do not see how it saves any time off line speaking this way. Especially if you have to to keep explaining it to everyone. No time saver there at all.

hi louise I once had a friend who was outspoken and was telling her about my attack of gall stones. she frowned then said IMi, and I had to ask what the heck that meant. Too much information dumb dumb.that was her reply. and that was ages back so she must have been texting even then. I do so hate that textese stuff and how so many people here use that in their responses. Cant anyone just spell out people instead of that gobbledeygook ppl. it is infuriating to me. text in your messages not in your mylot responses please alot of us oldsters do not know your codes.

Ok I do know what TMI means... But it i not part of my everyday language. It does not make sense to speak like that at all! I do understand that sometimes it is faster to abbreviate but that does not take place in speaking! I do not mind be considered a oldster I earned everyone of these Years!

LOL no I have not ever had that happen to me!but the one time I find that the abbreiviated form comes in very useful is when text messaging,it cuts down on the pages used ,and you can keep the sms relatively cheap still to send.

I don't think I've ever had that kind of a conversation with anyone but it is funny, if you think about it. I think she's been IM'ing way too much also...If I ever did talk with anyone that was doing that, I would just probably laugh about it.

I have to agree with Ldyjarhead, that is SAD! I would have to suspend phone and computer privileges if my kids started to speak that way. Of course, mine are grown, but still, if they ever speak to me in text speak, I would have to hurt them.
I am with you, I do not see how speaking this way saves any time. And, so what if it takes you a whole two seconds longer to say the word instead of the letters, what are you losing in that two seconds? All I can say is that is crazy, and in my opinion, totally unacceptable.

I am glad that my boys are not young, but if they would have done this. I would not have been happy about it at all!
