If you go to a psychiatrist, does that mean you're crazy?

...Or that you have something seriously wrong with your head?
I'm a psych major and have always been interested in becoming a psychiatrist. However, with the mindset that people have in our country, I doubt I'd be able to help too many people. Lol. I guess you may be wondering why right? For some reason, when you suggest people to see a psychiatrist, the reaction would be very negative... They would think that only crazy people go and see psychiatrists. I don't understand why this is the case. I've always found psychiatrists as very helpful especially when one has nowhere else to go. Sometimes, they can actually prevent people from hurting themselves more. Here where I live, if you tell them that you've gone to see a psychiatrist, I bet you'll get THE look (it's like you can actually see what going on in their minds--this person must be on the verge of breakdown, has something wrong in the head, is going crazy etc.) Lol. I don't know why it's such a taboo to see a psychiatrist.
A lot of times, when my friends have really big problems or are clinically depressed,I would suggest for them to see a psychiatrist, if they don't want to see one, at least go to a licensed psychologist. Instead of trying to battle things on their own and drowning in the process.
So to the people here on Mylot, have you been to a psychiatrist? What are your thoughts on this?

I never experience talking to a psychiatrist but I actually don't mind have a session with them if I can't take my problems anymore.A lot of people actually have a different notion if one seeks a psychiatrist.Actually it would be best if we have a psychiatrist at the office or psychologist or whatever.WE need to have a stress management program. If you observe at agents..it seems that we have dual personalities already. While on the phone we are kind to our customers even though the customer is already furious and then all the agent has to do is press the mute button and hit the table and say...G*go pla to eh.lol.and then unmute the cx and be nice to the customer again.lol.

I think that if someone goes to a psychiatrist it doesn't mean he/she is crazy but he/she ether don't have friends or don't have friends that he/she can trust... I mean if I have a problem or something bothers me I'll go to friends I trust and know me and they'll help me with this... :)

Friends (or family members) are actually the best people to help you with problems. Sometimes though it gets too much that you need advice from other people.

I don't think so. Going or visiting a psychiatrist doesn't imply you have mind problems or something of that sort. It's what people usually think. But for me, it's all about clearing your mind with all the problems, nuisances, worries that are becoming a hindrance to your daily life.

True. I guess one has to learn how to clear the mind of problems. However, there are times when it becomes really difficult to do so.

Of course not! Just tell them, in fact that if someone crazy, he/she won't go to the psychiatrist by them selves It's not only crazy people visit the psychiatrists, but depress, phobia, and stress people is, they visit because they don't want to be a crazy people at the end, don't worry it's a nobel job you'll have, just keep on spirit

I know. I just don't get why people are so hesitant to approach these people.

It only means your smart enough to get yourself cured or however you call it. Doesn't mean like you're sick or something. Sometimes you just need the ability of a psychiatrist to be able to understand your self/problems more in a scientific approach.

people who have "old school" views tend to think this way that something is wrong with your head if you go to a psychiatrist. but of course if you go to a doctor there is really something with you. but you go to a psychiatrist for help but not because you're loony. if you are crazy, you probably won't go to a psychiatrist. you won't have the sense to go there. and no, i haven't been to one and no one has advised me to see a psych's help.

Hi mommyfied.
Yes. I'd have to agree with you on that. If you were loony, you wouldn't seek help in the first place.
