My sister in law went to one gas station and they were out of gas. Another on had a really long line.
What is going on here?

I live outside of charlotte, NC and yesterday when I went to take my husband to the dentist there was one shell station that had some gas off of Hwy 74 and the gas were all lined up to get gas but when we came home the station was out. The majority of the stations are out of gas but I was told the trucks will be coming in this weekend.

i heard today on the news that some guy got arrested because he fought with this guy that cut in front of him on line at the gas station.
i also heard some lady had to wait an hour and a half to get gas.
This college had to cancel some classes because students were not showing up.
My ex husband is in NY and the gas prices are 60 cents lower than they are down here in NC also they don't have the shortage we have.
its frustrating.

We are effected by the lines that are down. I have seen a few smaller stations out of gas but most places have just limited gas to ten gallons being pumped at a time. Thankfully we prepared before hand and filled up all of our vehicles and our gas jugs. We just filled the truck up again this morning. I feel sorry for anyone driving huge gas guzzling vehicles right now. I did have an F-150 and ten gallons didn't do very much to the tank!

Gas shortages have popped up in a handful of states -- I hadn't heard about North Carolina, but it stands to reason that as people go out and look for more gas...the shortages may spread from the handful.
Unfortunately, the shortages may get more intense before they get better according to the experts who write for financial online news sites I've been listening to lately.
People're already fighting over gas though...so I hate to even speculate about what it might be like in about a week.
The shortages are mostly because of Ike and all the equipment that was damaged in the Gulf and how slow it is to get all fixed. PLUS gas stations are struggling, since there was gouging after the hurricane, since it may not be a very profitable business for them to buy alot of gas with the prices fluctuating...among other factors which makes gas slow to get to the pumps.

Some of the southern states who mainly get their gasoline from raffineries in the Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas area, currently have trouble to maintain gas supplies because of the production interruption caused by the hurricanes. Even if they raffineries would be working at full speed right now, which they are not, because there are repairs to be made and the system gets slowly back online, the infrastructure to get the gasoline to the respective gas stations is interrupted by the hurricane damage. It will be like that for some time to come.
In KY the governor gave suppliers special permission to roll out the winter gasoline early, which apparently is already ready to be distributed. He hopes to alleviate any supply shortages this way.
