John McCain's thoughts on being rich: "Some of the richest people I have known in my life are the most unhappy? I think that rich should be defined by a home, a good job, and education and the ability to hand our children a more prosperous and safer world than the one we inherited." Later he said: " So I think if you're just talking about income, how about $5 million." What's your opinion about John McCain's comments about who is rich?

What i was trying to say was both of these candidates are bad and i won't be voting for neither one of them i must agree that Sen. John McCain looks to be the lesser of the two evils but i can't bare the thought of voting for a republican even if i did like McCain republicans tends to favor the rich and not the working class of this country look at the banking troubles Bush is ready to bailout his rich buddies...

I think the point McCain made in his answer is valid. Lots of people are wealthy but they are miserable and their money cannot buy whatever it is they truly want and need. Everyone knows John and Cindy McCain have money and resources. Cindy is an heiress, after all. I think they have also proven they have a lot of what money can't buy, too, good character and the spirit of giving that will make McCain's administration a truly great one. I hate it when people think elections are all about money and which candidate is likely to give them more of it, instead of what ultimately will be best for the USA.

I do think there are two kinds of riches, material and the other kind. I do think if you just make wealth being what McCain says about a good home and education, it is only part of the equation. Wealth does no good unless it comes when it can help others besides the person who has it. So if you get those riches when you can help someone or others or do some benefits with it, then you will be happy. If it comes too late, it does no good. So in a sense he was saying that the most important part is what he said at the end making the world safer and more prosperous for our children. And I would bet those unhappy wealthy men received their wealth too late in their lives to do any good and they are now unhappy.

I always wondered how would those rich people feel is they had gotten their money at the age of thirty or forty instead of at eighty. I mean, if they were nice people to begin with, they would have probably given their money away to charity when they were young, so maybe God decided to give them the money later in life so they would live life before being philanthropic. Thanks for the best response.

I think your ideas are valid. One of the most joyful feelings you can have is to know you helped someone and made the world a better place. However, I can't conceive of receiving one's wealth too late in life to help people. It's never too late.

I think McCain provided a good answer here. He is right to say that being rich is much more than material wealth and that it is important to be happy and have a nice family. In terms of the 5 million dollars definition of being rich, that's probably right as well. Having 1 or 2 or 3 million dollars certainly makes you well off but not rich. Having 5 million would seem to be about the right amount, though of course in no-way would you be called super-rich with that amount.

I think the $5 million comment was meant to be a joke, but in today's world, I think you are right, it takes a lot more $$ than it used to before one can really claim to be rich.

I agree. The Good Book says people's lives are not made up of the things they possess, and also that godliness with contentment is great gain.
