My daughter is in first grade this year and she has homework every single night? Is this normal? Her teacher says it is and all of the parents have been complaining. I just don't see how can a 1st grader have homework every single night? To me that is crazy and a little to much!!! And to think it's just going to get worse.

There's really no good reason for it. I think it's because some parents are convinced that if their kids don't learn everything as fast as possible they won't get into the best colleges, and won't be a success in their lives. If you know that your daughter is learning the lessons, just put your foot down as politely as possible and send the homework back with a note that you don't think it's necessary and you're not going to put an extra burden on your child. Believe me, nobody cares what grades kids get in elementary school. Colleges don't look at anything but high school grades and test scores, and employers don't even care about those. Let your daughter have her childhood.

Thanks for the response, I've sent a couple of letters to the teacher about the amount of homework and that I'm not going to push her to do all the homework and I got a letter back that she will have no choice but to give her F's on her homework which will affect her over all grade!! And I don't want my daughter to be embarased or anything like that, I just want her to enjoy school and first grade. Is that to much to ask??

Don't feel bad. My son has homework every night too.. He is in Kindergarten. Whether this is normal or not.. I am not quite so sure.. I feel just like you do. I had a teacher that gave my son homework over the weekend.. I do know that I wished that his teacher would give them one day off of homework.. If it is Wednesday that would be great! PM me. I would like to discuss more with you about this!
