SPAM....how do you cook it?

With that rising prices of everything today, even food, a report comes out that the sale of SPAM is on the rise again....so i guess, people are just buying this type of canned good rather than buy a very expensive pork or beef or chicken. Who are we to blame them right?! Well, since SPAM is being consumed, have you tried any other way of cooking it aside from frying it? I know, there are recipes on its cans already. But which ones have you REALLY tried? The only way I have cooked SPAM is by frying and putting it as part of the omelette. Any other way you know?

Because I hate the way it tastes. I don't like hotdogs either.

You can put it in just about anything you can think of! Try boiling some macaroni with chicken broth, then add some parsley or something for flavor. You can also try putting chunks of the spam in some pasta or spaghetti. There are many dishes you can mix spam with! To me, nothing tastes bad with a little spam!

You can slice it for sandwichs, chop it up and add it to ramen soup. Dice or slice it for any recipe where you would use ham for flavoring. Maybe in split pea or other soups. I hardly ever buy it and when I do, I get the low fat variety. It's not something I'd eat because it's enjoyable, but sometimes it helps stretch the grocery budget.

It is odd, but then SPAM is a great earthquake/flood preparedness item. Can be eated out of the can if no fuel or heat to cook it...stays in the can, no refrigeration needed until opened and since it is a small can, one can per meal, no left overs. I love spam. The taste is unique and it is quite popular in Hawaii for their shish-ka-bobs and laua's. My son loves it too! IT isn't that good for you if you eat it all the time, but it is a treat for me. When my son visits, I pull out a can! Last time, he pulled it out and we like it fried best, but he got distracted and let it burn....but it smelled so good, we tried it anyway and it tasted so close to bacon, we both ate all that burned!!! It is expensive tho -for what you get. But lately it has been on sale at Walgreens for $1.99 a can so I have been stocking up on it!! It's up to $4 a can in the stores. I'll put a can of it in my son's christmas stocking this year! He loves it and it is a silly thing and we will both get a good laugh and it is a mother/son thing to boot! A great memory!!!

I've cut it into chucks, fried with onion and garlic then add some greens like collards or turnip greens. Serve with corn bread or muffins. Yummy!

My favorite way of cooking SPAM is by chopping it into cubes and then mixing it with chopped potatoes, chopped onions, and crushed garlic and then frying it. It's really good, especially when you eat it with rice.

The only way I have ever eaten SPAM is to slice it and fry it in a pan and make a sandwich out of it. I do not eat it very often. It is too salty to eat a lot of.
