vending machines have been around forever so its not like they are too new to take pennies or something but my whole life no vending machines will take them.. the freaking usa makes them.. they are actually costing more to make than they are worth but yet we cant get rid of them!! stores dont want them if you have a lot of them.. they refuse to sell to you (i have witness this with some one that rolled pennies) GRRR!!!! so does any one know WHY they dont take them?? is it because they are afraid of it taking up too much room in the coin holder thing??

Cause when you get something out of a venidng machine it doesn't cost something like 2.02 or 3.04 so it doesn't want pennies to fill up the machine and have to give people back pennies when they put in to much money cause they dont' have the right amout of change. I would not want to get back a bunch of pennies if I put in 2.00 for someting that was 1.50 know what i mean.

I think take this name is right. The machine was not wired to give change back and only takes change for the higher amount because of it. The stores have stopped placing them out side because of the fact that they don't get to charge more if it's in the vending machine. Frankly the cokes inside are sill more no than ever before. Even the off-off brands have raised there prices.

because it take up too much space in those little slots, many places now are not even taking nickel and dimes anymore for the same reason. Most things are over a dollar

I think space is the primary issue with vending machines not taking pennies. Considering how expensive things are in vending machine in my area, it would be a small feat to actually buy something in one with pennies. As far as buying something in a store with pennies, I didn't think a store could refuse to take them. I know they can't take them, or any amount of change rolled, they'd have to count it. But technically it's still legal currancy, so I don't know how they could refuse.

I can't speak ask to why vending machines don't take pennies, but my guess is that the space that stores the coins is limited, the person that serves the route doesn't want to deal with all the pennies, whatever. I will say however that the self checkouts at walmart DO take pennies. I once bought all the pennies from my work's postage bag and went to walmart to buy some things. I had like $5.00 worth of pennies and was going to buy about $40 worth of merchandise. In went the pennies, one by one, and a guy behind me asked "Are you going to pay for $40 worth of stuff with pennies?" I looked him straight in the eye and kept a straight face and said "No, I don't have $40 worth of pennies", then turned and kept inserting penny, penny, penny, until I ran out, then paid the balance with my bankcard. Dontcha know he was pissed!!!

That is a good question. Vending machines, payphones, parking meters, the damn coin oporated washing machines in the laundry room of my apartment building.... it would be great if all of the above mentioned machines would take away our pennies for us. LOL As it is we have a little mailbox full of them here in the house that we don't know what to do with.

too bad we cant find a place to melt them down since the copper is worth more than the value of a penny now which is why i find it so stupid to keep making the dang things!

Yes, I don't really understand why vending machines don't take pennies either. It's just money same as dines and nickels. I guess it could be because it would take a lot of pennies to pay for a one dollar soda or a candy bar. Maybe the machine can't hold all that change. Though I definitely would collect more pennies if I can use them in vending machines.

I think that one of these days the penny will disappear. They're pretty worthless these days. NOTHING costs a penny anymore! I miss the days of the 'penny candy'. Now, penny candy costs ten cents! The only machine that I know of that takes pennies are those change machines that exchange the pennies for you (at a cost) or give you a store credit. I'm sure the reason no other vending machine takes pennies is because of the room they take up. Imagine buying a bottle of soda that costs $1.25. One hundred and twenty five pennies take up a lot more room than 5 quarters! Yeah, pennies are pretty much worthless these days. I really don't think they'll be worth anything one of these days soon. The U.S. will just stop making them and offer a trade if you've been collecting pennies before they simply won't accept them anymore. I just roll them when I have enough, take them to the bank and add them to my checking or savings account. Well, I've always done this, anyway. Fifty cents is worth more to me in the bank collecting interest than sitting in a drawer somewhere.
