Hello nupats, I think when one love something/one it is difficult to get over that loss. I think that she need to consider the health of her kids and in doing this try and forget about the dog. Being there as a friend is helpful but I would recommend that you don't mentioned the dog to her because each time she is brought attention of the loss she will go deeper into depression. Help her to think more on the positiveness and try on coax her into remembrance of happier time. This help alot.

A dog becomes a member of the family, almost like a child. I can understand how depressed your friend is but there must be something else she's unaware of making her so much so, because her baby should make her feel better. I hope that she snaps out of it soon, I will say a prayer for her.
