Do you personally know someone who is homeless? Do you try to help them?

Not long ago I saw one of my classmates that I graduated with on the streets. She appeared to be homeless but I did not want to believe that she was. When she saw me she quickly tried to avoid me. I saw her again, my children were with me that day. I said hi________and I really did not know what to say to her. She looked so embarrassed and could not even look at me when I spoke to her. I don't know what happened. I want to help her but her body language is saying stay away from me I don't want any help. I want to help but don't know how. If I see her again should I just not speak or offer help because she does not want it? I just feel bad for her because when she was in school she was always smiling something was different about her but she was a very friendly person.
