Should mobile phones be banned in schools and colleges?

I was just reading an article of cell phones being banned from usage by students in college campus. Infact some cell phones were confiscated after students were caught exchanging sms in class. What do you think should be done, a complete ban or just keeping the phone switched off in class?

i don't think it should be banned entirely in class but it should be turned on a silent mode when in class so that students can focus more with the lesson and if there are emergency calls they should just leave the room to attend to it to avoid interruptions for the entire class. in our case for graduate students, sometimes there are business calls that should be attended to immediately so i think they should be allowed by the professors but the students should have discipline and respect for their professors and classmates and use only their cellphones when necessary.

Hello,Rajesh! I am not in favor of allowing cell phone to students in side the premises as by this the students do various types of mischief with the fellow girls students. They create often unpleasant situations in the class and in the premises. In fact my government (Orissa government)have already banned the use of cell phones by students as well as by the teachers in the campus.Thanx.

I am mixed in my thoughts on this subject. I think that the use of cell phones distracts from the ultimate experience of learning. With the invention of sites such as ChaCha, it allows a child to cheat on every test or quiz there is. College students are paying for their education, and if they wish to throw away hard earned money, it is their choice to make as an adult. Hopefully, they aren't tossing away their parents hard earned money. However, as a parent, I would hate the thought of my child not being able to use a cell phone to contact me in an emergency situation or of me not being able to contact him or her. Going to school these days is as dangerous as going to a dark alley in a big city in the middle of the night. Perhaps the solution is to ban them from having them turned on during class, and if found to be using them, disciplinary action should be taken from there.

This is a stickey situation but I didn't have cell phones in class when I was in school and we went on living just fine. I don't see why they need to have their cell phones on in school. I can understand after school but not during. There's too many ways to cheat now. Lots of phones have the internet on them and all text message. They should have to have them turned off and if a students phone rings or anything while in class, then I think the teacher should be able to take it away and tell the student that they can have it back at the end of the day. There is NO need for cell phones in school!
