watched for a few minutes. I had to laugh, it was about "drugs" the Spanish found in the new world and chocolate was deemed as one of them. Some Nuns were making chocolate, they got so addicted that they forsook thier duties for making and consuming chocolate all day. The Catholic Church outlawed chocolate. It didn't work (like they had to say that). So have you seen that show? Do you think of chocolate as a drug? Why do you think the Nuns got so addicted? I think it was probably the only fun they had in their lives back in those days. Do you find chocolate addicting? How addicting if you do? Can you take it or leave it? People seemed to be using it more in moderation when water and chili peppers were added instead of milk and sugar. Do you think the milk and sugar adds to the addiction or just the taste? I know I'm a lot happier with chocolate than without it. I know that if I eat a pure chocolate square, I can stop at one, but if I eat ones with milk and sugar, I feel compelled to eat more. How about you? Have you ever tried pure chocolate versus with sugar and milk ( like just pure cocoa powder?)?

Ewww, don't think I could eat chocolate like that..I do like dark chocolate which I believe still has the sugar, but no milk and I love it, I can eat a whole bar and still want more..I think chocolate can be addicting, but only if sweetened, at least for me..

I notice that if I have the milk and sugar, I could eat it all day like the Nuns, but plain, a little goes a long way.

I love chocolate and would prefer to eat it instead of a meal. Yes, it is addicting but so satisfying. I bought some Hershey's chocolate syrup the other day and added it to a glass of Coke. When I was a kid we drank fountain chocolate cokes. I did this last night because I wanted chocolate. It satisfied my craving. I do monitor my chocolate intake because I could definitely overdose. Sometimes eating chocolate late at night will make me restless all night and I won't sleep as well. It's loaded with caffeine which is addicting.

I don't find coffee or tea addicting-maybe because I don't even like the taste of them. I can take them or leave them. Even plain chocolate, I can take it or leave it. But with milk and sugar, I can't stop. Each person has their own theory, that's part of why this topic is fun. I haven't eaten it late at night, I bet it would make me restless. Take care

Sugar is addictive, so I am sure that was part of it. Chocolate also has a caffeine like substance, so would be addictive like coffee, and then it provides some minerals. I guess the nuns were deprived of pleasure in many ways, so it hit them hard. I get dark chocolate, and yes, I can eat one piece, and it is enough. White chocolate, or milk chocolate, I could eat a vatful.

I think the sugar and the milk really smooth it out and make it taste more pleasurable. Yes, sugar is addictive, hadn't really thought about that. Maybe because I like honey, maple syrup, brown sugar, and molasses better. White Sugar by itself tastes like nothing to me. I think we think alike concerning the Nuns, probably a life devoid of pleasure and then, suddenly chocolate.

Wow, I would have liked to have seen that. I do know that the early settlers thought tomatoes were posionous.

Unfortunately , that is true. Many people still believe anything wild and red is poisonous.

did you know that, even today, there is slavery that goes on because of the cocoa bean trade? cocoa beans are only grown between the tropics, making this a commodity that has a limited growth, making it very valuable. also, chocolate has the same affects on the brain as does heroin. think about that...

No, I didn't know slavery was still involved in it. You mean a limited area in the world where it is grown? Which affects that are the same as heroin? Heroin addicts seldom get off heroin, tend to weigh almost nothing and will overdose and die rather than give it up or sometimes even eat something. I worked in a jail where many police officers rescued heroin addicts and I watched them go through withdrawal. I've never seen someone go through throwing up, shaking, and turning colors from withdrawing from chocolate, so I have no idea what you are talking about.
