Why do schools keep debating about uniforms?

I have been wondering this for a while now and would like to hear others opinions on this subject. Why uniforms? What is wrong with normal, clean, and respectable clothes. They seemed fine when I was young.

i think the problem comes in with the whole 'respectable' word.
I have seen some of the clothing that some of the girls wear to school, and i gotta say, i really dont think school is the place to be wearing them. Short, i mean, short skirts, tight tight tops and the list gos on.
Apparently the schools think that the kids cant learn if they wear certain clothing!
In short, i think the reason schools are pressing for uniforms is to have more control over what is worn into the classrooms.
I can understand that problems might arise with some of the apparel that is chosen to be worn, but i dont think it interferes with learning, however, i dont run the board, haha nor would i want to.
Besides, think of the time we parents would save on laundra if they all went into uniforms ;)

The time saved is an awesome thought, but the money spent on them is outrageous!
They do not think of that when they put uniforms into play on how that will be for the parents that do not have an abundance of money. I do agree that some of the things kids wear to school are definitely out of line...dress codes I can live with...

ya that is definately a good point brought to the table..the cost of the uniform.
Funny...we can get a job where we need a uniform, but, it is supplied to us from the company at no extra cost, yet, the schools cant follow the same path. That is one thing i just cant get my head around.
I know that if we dug into the politics of it, the ending result would be the board/ministry saying they dont have the money to put out for the uniforms, that is a debate all on its own.
It would not be so bad if say, the parents had to put out 200 at the beginning of the school year (ok, maybe october) then, if the uniforms are still in good condition at the years end, a full or partial refund was given. The way it is set up now, you have to hand out half a months rent to pay for them, then, at the end of it all, you are stuck with the uniform. I guess you could always resell it to a friend or something for their child if they were going into the same school to atleast try to get some money back...

They think they are going to solve problems I do not think the uniforms solve any issues.

Uniforms are handy because there wont be distinction between families coming from a poor and rich families. Besides that it is more easier for teacher to recognise whom are their students and who are not, especially in a school outing.

I think it's because alot of children don't wear normal, clean and respectable clothing. Alot of the time kids wear things that are inappropriate for school, which is really no fault of these. The fault for that clearly falls to the parents. I went to Catholic school for 10 years and wore uniforms the whole time. I was simplier with everyone dressed the same. No one was dressed any better than anyone else, so the poorer children (like me) didn't have to feel out of place (like I did in high school) because my mom couldn't afford the name brand stuff that was popular at the time. I would think it would also be cheaper for the parent. Instead of having to go out and spend a ton of money on school clothes every year for every season, a couple of uniforms that would last all year long and most likely from year to you. JMO

I think for the schools, students wearing uniforms would make them organized and also it would show that you are a student from that school by your uniform. I think that students should have the freedom to wear normal, casual clothes if they want to. But I'm not really against uniform as they also have their advantages.

This debate seems to come up quite often anymore with the school systems. When I was growing up we had to wear our skirts to the knee, not show cleavage, and dress respectfully. Nowadays one parent might think something is totally inappropriate for school, while another one thinks it's ok to dress provocatively, etc. Now it seems like students are more into a fashion show, or being way different (think Goth & grunge...not that that's wrong either). In my opinion, the kids are there to learn, and all the alternative 'dress' takes away from the reason they're there. School is not a place where they should be trying to dress sexy! If the kids would choose normal, clean, and respectable clothing, then there wouldn't be a problem...but everybody wants to be different and stick out from their peers. I have often thought that now they should have uniforms, that would put each child/teen/whatever age, on an equal basis with their peers. No longer would one child be seen as 'the poor kid', or any other tag that kids seem to give others that don't dress like themselves. While uniforms might not be fair in one way (loss of freedom of choice) it is fair in others.

Hi Shell,
I live in liverpool UK, alot of people here struggle to buy their children uniforms for school-by letting children attend school in casual clothes would be unfair to the less well off simply because those families with money would in my mind no doubt buy only the best for their children ie;designer clothing etc,so the less well off who could not afford such clothing would be bullied for having basic clothing-not a very good idea at all in my oppinion.
