As a child I was charmed by Joan of Arc and Anne Frank. Both are exemplary in their own ways. Two opposite kind of personalities yet they touched me like anything. They still do.
[b]Who are your favorites?

Anne's Last Diary Entry - August 1, 1944
"A voice within me is sobbing, "You see, that's what's become of you. You're surounded by negative opinions, dismayed looks and mocking faces, people who dislike you, and all because you don't listen to the advice on your own better half." Believe me, I'd like to listen, but it doesn't work, because if I'm quiet and serious, everyone thinks I am putting ons new act and I have to save myslef with a joke, and then I'm not even talking about my own family, who assume I must be sick, stuff me with aspirins and sedatives, feel my neck and forehead to see if I have a temperature, ask about my bowel movements and berate me for being in a bad mood, until I just can't keep it up anymore, because when everybody starts hovering over me, I get cross, then sad, and finally end up and turning my heart inside out, the bad part on the outside, and the good part inside, and keep trying to find a way to become what I'd like to be and what I could be if...if only there were no other people in the world.
Yours, Anne M. Frank"

My favorite person is Albert Einstein.I nver ceases to be amazed at the power of his thoughts. He is way ahead of our times and at the same time simple and very reasonable.
My fvorite of his quotes is 'God does not play dice with the universe'.
Einstein believed that that the universe was deterministic in the sense that every event that occurs is caused by other events. Our ancient ancestors shared the same belief that every event that occurs is ultimately caused by a God.
I strongly think he is one of the remarkable geniuses God has ever created.
It is so interesting and absorbing to try to understand his theories. The more you read his theory of relativity the more you get wrapped into it.I just adore him.

Both of those women were truly remarkable. One woman who i really admire is katherine of aragon, henry Viii's first wife, she was cast aside yet still stood strong in her beliefs, she maintained that she had not slept with her first husband until the bitter end and would not give up on her religion or her marriage to the husband she loved regardless of being separated from her only daughter, being forcedto live in damp, unhealthy old buildings and effectively being pushed aside while people waited for her to die, she didn't give in. I think that takes a really strong person to be able to put up with such awful living conditions in order to maintain what they believe in, it kind of makes me wish that i had something that i believed that strongly in, as beliefs are obviously an enormous source of strength for some! xxx

There are some really good historical novels out there (perhaps not completely true historically but fundamentally pretty accurate - and entertaining too!!) phillipa gregory and jean plaidy are good authors to look out there for novels about this era! xxxx

Those are beautiful and extremely touching words of Anne Frank. I must admit, that i know little about her , but after reading this i surely would be interested in knowing more.
From my childhood i have always had the fascination for our freedom fighters and reformists and have always tried to follow whatever i could on them. There are a lot of great personalities and historical persona who have influenced my thinking, but the topmost would be Lokmanya Tilak and Mahatma Gandhi. Since very little is talked about Tilak, i would like to take this discussion to share a little bit about him
Lokmanya Bal Ganghadhar Tilak to many was the "uncrowned king of India" and has been described by Mahatma Gandhi himself as the maker of modern India. To many he was a creative genius. He worked for the masses and once wrote "There is no greater folly than the assumption of the educated classes that they are a seperate class from the mass of the people.Their own salvation depends on the salvation of the people .He is remembered by many for his profound vision and dynamtic action.
Though many know him as a political leader fe know that he was a genius at literay work . After having learnt and been influenced by his politcal and social thoughts, his literary workd are those which i am keen on pursuing now.
Having shared this there are those in the category of those that i love to hate. But that's another matter and for some other time.
Thanks Mimpi again for sharing Anne Frank, please do share some more about her.

Thanks Alok for your response. Posts like these have always been close to my heart and this response has kind of helped me rekindle my thoughts. Thanks once gain.
Bal Gangadhar Tilak has been my favorite as well. He is one of the unsung heroes of our country. People are less aware of his literary work and his infallible contribution towards our freedom but that doesn't make his less great. My heartfelt tribute to this great person along with you.
There have been and still is speculations about Mahatma Gandhi's greatness. While he is hugely revered worldwise some Indians do not regard him as a patriot. In fact there has been dilemma as to his active participation for the partition. I just want to tell those that inspite of all those we must learn to respect this statuette persona. His contribution and the ability to gather and stimulate patriotism shouldnot be over ruled. So, let's just stop this camps and lobbies and give respect to Gandhiji and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and all others.
Kudos to all.

Your discussion and comments have rekindled my desire to get back into learning and reading more and more about the contributions of these great human beings towards our nation and society. Rather than dwell and debate on their actions, we have to comprehend and greatly appreciate their sacrifice, their vision and their contributions.

That' great way to put it. I don't even heard of many mentioned here. They are great heroes in their own ways but see how little we know about the world!

I regret that this discussion does not appear to be my cup of tea. I have not heard the names of Joan of Arc and Anne Frank, poor me, cannot decipher about them. Could come to know about them after reading your posts. I have read about Gandhiji a lot and consider him as a great historical leader.

I read the Anne Frank diaries when I was in school and probably never really appreciated them as much as I should have at the time to be honest. This always seems to be the case when we are told we have to read something rather than discovering and reading it of our own accord. I really should take the time to read these diaries again I think..... When I was younger I was obsessed with "The Time Machine" by H.G Wells and also "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding. Both of these books provided me with a lot of imagination and fascination. I didn't have an affinity to any particular character in either book as such but it was more the stories in general that intrigued and inspired me!

I can understand. I never read her in school but only as a part of my interest and also a voracious reader that I was I came across the diary, the I watched the movie. I was so engrossed that I couldn't come out of it for days. What a plight the Jewish had faced and what a tyrant Hilter was!
Recently I watched the movie again in History Channel, I think only last Saturday.
Thanks.

Eew I don't like Anne Frank. I didn't enjoy her book. It was entertaining enough, but we had to study it when I was in high school. So I guess that turned me off. Instead of just enjoying her story I had to memorize passages and be graded on my knowledge. I'm interested in the English and French royalties though. I find their lives really interesting.

I agree, just for the exam purpose and memorising those gets boring. But I am sure you will be moved if you read it now.
Thanks.

I love history and I admire a lot of historical personas. One of them would be Anne Frank. I haven't read her diary but I was able to watch her story in a theater play. I hope to get a copy when I get around to it. I also love Winston Churchill. When I was in college, my English thesis was about him. I think he's one of the best statemen ever. ;D

my favourite history person is adolf hitler.. no offense meant but his biography taught me how a wonderful idea can go seriously wrong if you let your motivation and idea take control of your senses... his acts are perfect examples of what not to do to become successful... virtually carrying out anything however grotesque it may be to achieve one's goals is not a very good idea....

That's a different and interesting perspective. Its a good thing that we can learn things even from some grotesque things on earth. Even though it sounds weird but it makes sense if we think more deeply.
Thanks for enriching this discussion.

My favorite is St. Therese of Lisieux. Her life story is so inspiring. It's really hard to follow her examples. We can't even live the way she lived, not even 10% of it. But at least, we are inspired by the little ways she did for the love of Jesus. In my own way, whenever I remember her, I try hard to do just as she did. :)

Hi Mimipi, I must admit I have never read Anne Fransk diaries as I was never interested in anything to do with history of any kind at school. However Joan of Arc has always fascinated and in recent history Mother Theresa. I must actually get a copy of the book and read as now I am older much more interested in this type of thing. Huggles. I always admire Mother Theresa. I think what she did is very novel and i admire her strength and determination to help people no matter what race and religion they may have. She never even stop helping people even though she is already old. I wish there are still people with a good heart like her nowadays. She is a good samaritan and she inspires a lot of people that no matter what race or religion we may had we are all brothers and sisters in Gods eyes.
