Is there a better way to catch a mouse?

So yesterday I told everyone how I caught a mouse with a glue trap. I left it until hubby came home, and he took the mouse out. He felt really bad and tried to set it free, but accidentally killed it in the process. He felt so bad about it.
We aren't crazy about mice, and certainly don't want them in the house, but we're not the type of people who can kill any animal, even if it is just a mouse. So we're not using the glue traps anymore. Even though it is the safest method in our home, we don't feel right with it.
I wouldn't mind if the animal died quickly, but the glue traps don't kill the mice, just catch them, and the glue is too strong to set it free after.
We can't use poison because of our children and cats. I don't feel comfortable with the snap traps because they are messy, and I still fear a cat or child will hurt themselves on it.
So what other options do I have, that are cheap and effective?

I hate those glue traps!!! They are extremely inhumane! You catch the mouse and it end up dying from lack of food and water.
Contact the local humane society. There are humane mouse traps made that will allow you to catch the mouse and relocate it in another area rather than killing it. Also there is an ultra sonic pest repeller that Rid-X makes that emits a tone on a non harmful frequency to humans and other animals. This sound repels not only mice but other insects that come into your home. It works too for fleas!
Thank you for not using the glue traps any more! As much as I don't like mice in the house, I don't like the thought of the horrible way that they are eliminated.
I am kind of surprised, as usually mice don't really want to come into a home with cats...

The device you describe sounds expensive, but I guess it's worth looking into. I've seen traps that catch them alive to relocate them. I guess I'll try those next.
It's odd that I don't mind when my cats kill mice, they do it all the time, but I don't want to kill them myself. I guess it's just nature taking it's course when a cat kills a mouse, but for me to do it it's cruel.

Thanks, I'll have to take a look. For $20 it's well worth it because we get flea problems in the summer as well.

Oh,I think that the mouse is more and more clever now.So is really very hard to catch them.If you can you can have a try with a cat. There are also a kind of tool in China but it maybe a little dangerouse while I know it's very useful.
