Can you live without electricity?

I endured a whole day and night without electricity yesterday. Our whole neighborhood shut down electricity for repairing. The life without electricity is too inconvenient and boring for me. I didn't know what to do, can't surfe online, or watch TV, even can't take a hot shower. I had to go to bad very early at night because I can do nothing without light.

Hurricanes leave Miami without electric power for hours or days or even weeks at a time, every year. Everyone I know has the same hurricane supplies: battery operated lights and fans and tv, and gas-powered camp stoves. I even have a butane-powered hair dryer and curling iron.

Heh...well considering we were poor once upon a time, I can honestly say I lived a few years without electricity. It's hardest in the winter, since without electricity you can't heat your house (ours was more of a shack at the time, lol). I don't know what this "bored" thing is that everyone speaks of. Worrying about keeping warm or making fires to cook food keeps life plenty exciting for me. Only recently, in fact, have we gotten steady television and internet, lmao. Ah, and baths. Man, you've no idea what heaven is until you've gone years without warm running water. And as for light, well, there's candles and flashlights if your eyes don't adjust...which they do, given time. In fact those years without electricity I was practically nocturnal anyway...I saw better at night than during the day, because the light hurt my eyes, haha! I don't mind so much going without light, as I do warm water. I CAN live without electricity. I don't use a ton of it anyway, but I do like what little bit I do use. Baths, my internet time. I know they're luxuries, but I won't give 'em up TOO easily. But I can. I sympathize with those who feel like they can't but if situations arise where there's not much of a choice, you adapt.

I had same experiences living without electricity many years ago. Just led a very simple life. No extra entertainments at all. After supper neighbours went out and gethered around to have talks at summer nights, and children ran and chased around grownups. Then we could see stars and moon very bright.

It's always hard. We LIKE conveniences. But if you gotta, you gotta, you know? It's why I try not to let myself get too hooked just in case there comes a time when I have to go without these conveniences again. Easier for me ^_^'

But now I am used to the life with electricity, so it's hard to go back. Using washing machine can release me from washing with manpower, and save me more time to do other things. So I like washing machine more than other electric facilities.

Omg no. I have also had that happen to me, but because of a storm. It's not too bad until you need a shower and wishing you could watch tv or get online.

I am the same. I feel boring for can't watch TV or go online. The worst I feel is when I want to have a hot shower , only cold water comes out.

No. I would go nuts without electricity. - no TV, no computer. (no heat or A/C) I would be very bored. And worst of all my food would spoil. I mean I could read a book for a little while. and sleep. :) lol. but eventually I would just go stir crazy. I once had no power for 12 hours. and it drove me crazy just waiting for it to come back on...

I think I can live with it for a limited amount of time. It'll be boring if you're spending that time without it by yourself. I never really had to live without electricity. The most I went without it was one day when there was a blackout in New York a good few years ago. It was actually fun though because I was by my cousins house. When the power shut off we thought that it was just her house so we left and walked to Burger King to kill time until to power came back on but when we got to Burger King we realized that they didn't have power either lol and that's when we realized it was the whole area. In a way it's kind of sad that we've become SO dependent on technology that we don't know what to do without it, especially since people survived without it before. Don't get me wrong, I love my technology lol. Before I got my first computer I used to spend my time reading a lot though. After I got it I didn't know how I survived without it.

It seems all modern people can't stand life without electricity. No electricity means we can not use any facilities driven by electricity, such as computer, TV, washing machine, electric fan, air conditioner etc. Hard to imagine how inconvenient it will be without electricity now. But more than ten years ago, there was no electricity at all in my hometown. We burn oil for light, and at day time we work in field and at night we have diner before sunset

Same, I remember a couple of years the electricity went out, for about 2 days.. because of a lightning storm, the first day i was alright since my ipod was fully charged but the second day was pure murder... I was going out of my mind then the light came back :)

I definitely cannot live without electricity. Almost everything in human life depends on electricity. Without electricity, we can't cook our dinner. Food will become spoil because you can't keep it for long time. W also will have problem in traveling around. I just watch Afterworld. After watching it, I realize human depend to much on technology and electricity. Even I know that, I still can't escape from the fact I need electricity in my life.

Hello, sweetyyyyyheart,I think I cant't bear without electricity, yesterday,we had a problem that someone forget to turn off the water, when I arrived at the office,I could see my office was full of water,so we cut off the power supply, and cleaned the office for about an hour, then when I sat downm,I wanted to read some article on my computer, but bud luck,I found there was no electyicity,I felt so upset, and I felt electricity was much important to our lives. And also without electricity we can't do even anything, and that's terrible.

Yes though its kinda hard but its back to basic and also its boring but if it happens well we should think that our great grandfathers before dont have electricity that time and they just use some oil from animal fats for the lamp.

I was born without electricity. So i can live without it but frankly speaking the time we had electricity was so nice and easy. If i will get back to no electricity it will be so much hard. I can live of course but it will be so hard without electricity specially if i will do cooking, ironing and i dont want to go back using the irons before.

Considering I am a student who studies computers, technology, and electrons, without electricity I would be flat broke. I use my computer every day for email, important work, and website design. Without any A/C would be bad, also. Of course, where I am at it is Autumn so the weather is rather mild, and feels great. I live approx 20min from an Amish community, and you can guess that many of them live without current. I have a few friends out there, and when I go to see them, I feel like I am a fish out of water. Here I am with my high-tech custom-built computer with a multi-monitor setup and about 4 computers in the house altogether, not mentioning the rest of the electronics. There they are without juice, working in a field with horses and mules, plowing by hand. I couldn't do it. I would die in a minute. How about you? Could you live like the amish? Rough question... Pretty farmland, but lot's of work and no current... Makes for a rough life...

I don't believe I could live without electricity. I'm so used to having I wouldn't know what else to do. Although I have been without power it always comes back on. It's so many bad things that comes without electricity. Your food goes bad in the refrig if it's off too long. You start tripping over stuff that you didn't know was on the floor. It's is boring as I don't know what. All you can really do is go to sleep.
