Internet... writing and reading haven?

Ever since I discovered the power of internet, I've been exploiting it to the fullest of my ability. Nothing illegal or anything... I just use it to pursue two of the things that I love in life... reading and writing.
I've been reading stuff from the net ever since I was thirteen. It's the "place" where I found unorthodox pieces of literature and for that reason, it encouraged me to be an aspiring writer myself. Now I use the net as a practice ground where people can check out my works and send me response. No need for literary agents, editors and publishers.
Do you read stuff via the internet like novels, essays, short stories and such? Can the internet substitute books and magazines for you? And for the writers out there, does the internet's help in giving you exposure worth it compared to the damage it can cause if your work get's distributed without your consent?

The internet is a major part of my life because it offers so much. I blog and write for various sites, so it's important to me as a writer. I don't really have any interest in being published by regular media because writing for the web lets me say what I want to say, in my own way. It also lets me reach more people. I don't worry too much about being copied, though I'd try to stop it if I did find out that someone had stolen my work. If I wrote something for money, once I'm paid I don't care what happens to it. If it's on one of my blogs, it probably won't be interesting to the kind of person who steals stuff instead of writing their own.
I don't read books on the web, though, because the computer screen is hard on my eyes, and reading anything that requires concentration is a strain if it goes on too long. I prefer books because they're easier on my eyes, and because I can underline, make notes, and dog ear the pages. Some of my books wind up being reference resources where I can find what I need very quickly.
