Religion: A Prison or Freedom?

what is the ultimate purpose of religion? after mush research i would say that religion only wants to control society so that people would not run a mock..i beleive the original founders did not intend to start a religion rather thay just want to teach people about the values about life and how to be wiser and how to be an enlightened individual..however their teachings and their persona were used the wrong way...their image and teachings were corrupted and manipulated and other people misinterpreted it over time..do you feel somehow trapped when you are labeled with a kind of religion and want to break free?
