Who use the internet he or she must to know that what his or her actual ip address. Where his or her internet will connect to the server. Its very easy to find out the actual ip address from the windows xp. Just follow the following steps. 1. Open the run menu form ur start up menu. 2.Type "cmd" and click ok. 3. You will see a window. 4. In this window type "ipconfig" and click Enter button 5. And u will find your actual ip address from here. Ip address is necessary to remote desktop wizard connection which is the networking tools where u can communicate with other at any where in the world without connecting the system to network cable. That means actual ip address is necessary for networking. I think all of u must enjoy it.

That works great if your on the inside of a Local Area Network where your ip is assigned by either a router or a DHCP server. Now if your on the outside is a LAN you will need either a vpn connection to the public ip address which you can find by going to www.whatismyip.com to get the public ip address. then the firewall needs to be setup to allow a remote desktop connection or any other type of remote access connection.

Thanks for the post, it really explain in details on the differences. On more things to add, if those PC are connect to one modem, most of the time they will fall within the preset IP range, thus the IP for both will still the same as they are in the same subnet. =)

Actually, the IP address reflected in ipconfig is the internal IP address and not the external IP address.

Excellent point. That is absolutely true. As I said in my post, you have a public and private IP Address. The public is the group of numbers that are assigned to your computer, and they never change. The private is the IP Address assigned by the DHCP, or the router, for you non-technical people out there. Once again, excellent poimt krkchn!

If you use FireFox, I suggest an extension called "Broadband Speed Test and Diagnostics". It tells you your IP, your Domain Name(Yes, you actually have your own Domain name), and allows you to do a few diagnostics. You can test your upload rate as well as your download rate. I use it frequently. It also tells you your static, public IP Address which you have if you are on a router-network like I am. Great tool! Of course, I am a computer technician, so I have my IP memorized, but it is still a good help...
