Sigh~ I really want to go to university after I had graduated from polytechnic with my diploma. But it's a dream of mine that I would have to put on hold for now. As it is with me working, I am already having financial cashflow problem, what more taking a loan to go to university! The cost of pursuing a degree is seriously too expensive for those poorer people in Singapore to even consider going for it, unless they have a sponser to sponsor them through the 4 years of university! It costs $32,000 for 1 year, and 4 years down the road, you will see yourself in a debt of $130,000 to clear. And I have done my calculations. It would take me roughly 10 years of working in a job that pays $2,500 to clear off the debts. So, no it's an impossible dream for me right now! Out of reach! How about you guys out there? Who have dreams that you can't fulfill because of money??

GO for private U, it's better.. IF u really want a degree, there's a way to get it cheap.. 1st of all, find a job u like, and related to the course u studied or wanna pursue.. After which, tell the company u have the desire to go for further studies and as long as u have the working experience and the company support, they will sponsor u for your degree, provided u must complete it and pass ^_^ Another alternative way is to look for those private institutes whereby they take in working experience as part of the course criteria, and that u will be able to pay a much lower fees for that ^_^ Studying in University, need not coast as much as u think it might be, because there are always alternatives as long as u are willing to explore ^_^

THat's so bad of your company.. BY sending the two of u for the PREVIEW of the whole course, to get u tempted, but at the same time your company won't sponsor u.. They are really 'jian' to resort to this trick in order to benefit their own company.. haha Sociology with psychology is new to me.. What is it about?? hehe ^_^ Or maybe have u tried or considered to study a totally different interest instead?? It might be another alternative for u, as once u get a degree for your new interest, u are able to work from that degree with higher pay, save up, and eventually u will be able to study your, sociology with psychology ^_^ hehe =D Though by then, u will be in your late twenties, but knowledge will never be late for u might find it useful in the future too ^_^ hehe

Yeah! That's the whole thing about my company. The management are people who are really manipulative and if you don't watch your own backs, you will never know when it will be before you become the scapegoat for some wrongdoings that they have done. But luckily for us, we are not tempted by it at all! Lol, we even fell asleep half way into the preview, and I skipped the 2nd day of the preview after I heard that I have to pay my way through if I am interested in the course. Lol. It's actually a combination of 2 majors into 1 - sociology and psychology. So you learn about the workings of the human brain as well as the behavioral aspects of humans in business dealings. That is interesting and well more worth it as you don't have to take two separate degrees and attend 8 years of university just to have a double degree Interested in taking up this course too??

That's what my friend did to get his company to sponsor him for his diploma course. Lol.. works on bigger or foreign companies, but will never work for the small company that I am working in. Lol.. you know what they did? They sent us for the PREVIEW of the diploma in Compliance (which is the department I worked for) and then said if we are interested in the diploma, we can sign up and pAY for it ourselves! And the freaking course will set us back a grand total of $16,000 for a 10 month course! It was to the extent that one of our agents asked my boss if they are not planning to sponsor us for the course, then why send us to the preview. And guess what my boss answered? It's priceless. Lol he actually answered.. it's for our benefits, and who knows either my colleague or I would get interested enough to signup for it! In their dreams.. By paying for the course ourselves and working for them, it would benefit them greatly as we would be known as certified compliance officers if we get that diploma. And that is a position way above the deputy CEO even as if we are certified, we have the rights to conduct investigations into how the DPT CEO conducts his business and terminate him anytime. No thanks.. If I am in other financial institute, this course would be sponsored and upon completion of the course, your salary would automatically increase by $1k plus. That's how stingy my company is, and trust me.. it's not that they can't pay. Lol. Our CEO is just someone who wants to get the maximum workman power out of a minimum overhead costs. That's his way of doing things. And another thing is that I won't be able to get a job in the course that I am interested in, which is sociology with psycology in business. This is only offered by SIM and no where else.. So.. and we can't go into this field unless we have the certification. Lol, so I am stuck! But thanks for your suggestion anyway! Take care and happy mylotting!!

Oh Dear.... does it cost that much in Singapore? Here, in my country, it's much more less. But for the salary we get we cannot afford even that much. However, I am a graduate and looking forward to do my masters. My present financial condition is not sufficient for that. Once my problems are over, I would do my Masters. That would cost me around $200.

Thanks for the wishes angelia! Yes, Sri Lanka is not one of the best in terms of living standards, like the cost the salaries are also low. Even in our country, foreigners earn a lot and live a luxury life than ourselves. This happens a lot in Multi-National organisations. That's the nature of the world. However, you are living in a developed country so you must be happy about that. Happy myLotting!

$200 for a Masters~! My gosh~ That is way too cheap! I sure would love to have that sort of pricing in Singapore! Well but I am guessing that the price of obtaining a Masters in Sri Lanka is somewhat proportionate to your standard of living or something? Well, Singapore is expensive, ranked 3rd in Asia and 1st in SE Asia. Lol, our salary can never match our cost of living. It's like our salary is twice our counterpart Malaysia, but then our cost of living is ten times theirs.. which makes Malaysians way luckier than us. What more, they have the choice to come to Singapore to work and earn twice their salary and live ten times cheaper than Singaporeans. This is the luxury and choice that is not given to Singaporeans. That is why you will always find foreigners working in Singapore way richer than singaporeans. We are like 2nd class citizens in our own country. Yes, it does cost that much to study here in Singapore! And I hate it here. I could never get over the fact that all foreigners can come here to study and work, but when Singaporeans want to go for cheaper school fees by choosing to study in Malaysia, we are rejected as we do not know Malay! sometimes, I really wonder if our government should implement the policies of people needing to know English before they can come to Singapore to work Well, good luck with your financial problems. Hopefully you will be able to achieve your goals and obtain your Masters! Well, take care!!

In my line of work (IT), a degree might not be a good thing. To move up the ladder in IT, you need be a specialist, and a general degree don't teach you that. Perhaps you could look into certification instead of a degree, sometimes a good certification would cost a faction of a degree, yet worth much more as a career move. (like a CMA or something)

Lol.. to get a certificate means to downgrade myself from a diploma downwards to a ITE certificate Nope, I don't think so. Thanks for your suggestions anyway. Here, people are moving upwards to a diploma after they get their ITE certificates. Lol, I don't think anybody does it the other way round. And anyway, in diploma courses they do teach us what they teach in a ITE education, just that the diploma course will be tougher on theory as compared to the ITE Certificates. Besides that, ITE graduates are one of the lowest paid in my country, and you are from Singapore too.. you should know this. Even my friend who is a technician (holding a ITE certificate) has to go and get a diploma certificate if he wants a higher salary. Lol both BRyan and Henry are doing the same work in SIA.. but as bryan holds a certificate, he gets $1.8k but henry with a diploma cert gets $3k per month. Bryan can't advance up unless he has the diploma or degree to back him up. So.. degrees is the answer to everything in Singapore. Like it or not, it's a paper society we have here! Well, take care and happy mylottinG!!

It's not really that expensive to go to a government university here.. but it's still around the same cost as what is stated. Different schools offers different rates as well. The prices quoted above is for a particular course in SIM that I wanted. And SIM is considered a semi-government school which means to say that the government only subsidise the fees partially. Well, private unis are not as expensive as those semi-government ones, as semi-government degrees are as recognised as those government ones, but private school degrees might not be recognised at all.. So it's always better to be cautious and not go for the private schools no matter how tempting it may seems to be. Yes, that is what exactly i am doing now. I am actually considering taking on another 2 more part time job in a bid to earn even more money. At the current salary which I am drawing now, that dream remains just that - a dream. Well hold on to your dreams too..! You will be able to achieve what you want to achieve too.. and that is seeing yourself in the university. Together we can make it! Lol.. take care!!

Hmm, since you've counted the cost, that's a good start. In fact that's one step nearer of reaching your goal. Many people don't even plan like you. You could try to find a sponsor? Have you tried that? You could at this time when you're working, build multiple streams of income? Some can be passive incomes even? If there's a will, there's a way. Nothing is impossible. Sometimes we just need encouragement & also the right connections & keys. Why not try selling on eBay? I've I'm not mistaken, there's no fee charges at the moment? Hope this does help a bit

Well, I wish you and your family all the best in getting through all your financial troubles and that you can too fulfill your dreams. Am unable to apply for one as my grades are not good enough due to much partying during my younger days. Lol, the only way to get a degree is to depend on myself and not anybody else! Thanks! Take care and happy mylotting!!
