What's going on with the presidential candidates?

The other night I watched the presidential debate on tv. I thought it was alright, but honestly I felt that one kept bashing the other about how he "didn't understand how things work," or that "he's not smart enough to run the U.S."
If anyone else watched it, you'd know that it was John McCain claiming that Obama wasn't fit to run the country. This discussion is not about taking sides and sticking up for your candidate, but do any of you think that he was going a bit too far with it? Like I mean, in my opinion, I think that the candidates should be more focused on telling their supporters what positive things they will be doing for this country, not trying to just make the other person look bad to make themself seem better or smarter. I was getting that whole vibe off McCain the whole time.
So, getting down to the point, what do YOU think matters most when it comes to persuading an audience to vote your way? Also, if you watched the debate, what did you think of it?

Unfortunately, with this election again it has come down to the choice of who will less screw up when leading our country. Both know whatever plans they have will not be realized during the next four years as the economy doesn't allow for that. Making any great promises right now would make it impossible to be re-elected in four years. Plus, people know it's impossible, lol. Furthermore on points of economy or energy both are pretty much on the same level as to what has to be done. Similarly for Iraq, they both want to pull out, just at different speed. So the finger-pointing starts. He is dumber, he knows less, he is less experienced, he doesn't love the country enough, ....
Both btw claimed that the other isn't fit to run this country, doesn't understand what's going on, and just ain't smart enough...

Yeah, that is true. It's a very crucial time and we just need someone who can lead us without putting us in a hole and making our country worse. Even though it is somewhat immature to call out the other one and say that they're dumb or whatever, nowadays I guess it has to be done lol. They will do what they want to do to win, but I thought McCain took it a little too far though. Obama was doing the same thing, but not in such a way that he was saying McCain was plain dumb. Every time it would go back to him, the first sentence would always contain "Obama does not understand.." blah blah. I'm not taking sides with this or arguing for a specific candidate because I've really yet to decide who I think will be fit enough to run the U.S.
