Optical mouse is far better especially if you have critters. Cleaning the fur out of a ball mouse is tedious. The optical mouse makes this chore a thing of the past.

optical mouse, because dirt gets inside the ball mouse a lot easier. i've been using my optical mouse for a couple of years now, and it still works pretty well. with a ball mouse, the longest i've used one was 6 months.

i think optical mouse is better because there is no need to change ball and optical mouses are durable.

He'll want the optical mouse in a bad environment. The track ball type will get dirty fast, wear out quickly. The light used is the same intensity of the Power LED, and is only active really when you are using it, that is when it draws the most power. You might want to send him an additional battery pack later on, so that he can charge both and have plenty of time to use it, if he tells you that the battery is wearing out quickly. But I really think it won't drain it that much.
I think you made the best choice with the optical mouse. They scroll much better, feel more fluid, are lighter and therefore take the stress of the wrists, etc..

I don't think there is much of a difference between the two of them. I think the only thing you should be careful of is with the optical mouse, make sure the surface that you use it on is not shiny or like a mirror. We tried that at work once with a very shiny mouse pad and we had some trouble with it. But other than that, I don't prefer either one of the other.
