high tech hygiene:how often do you clean your computer?

I've read reminders from our helpdesk support here in our company about the hygiene of our techie stuff.
It says there that if we don't smoke, eat, drink in front of our laptop/desktop, we should clean it at least once or twice a year. these cleaning materials could be use. small brush, piece of cloth/tissue paper, and alcohol.
I always clean the outside part of my desktop here in the office everyday. I just wipe it with tissue which has alcohol in it. but when I spill it with drinks, especially it's keyboard, I will remove all the keys and wipe every single side, and part of it. I just don't want to use a dirty and sticky keyboard...
I can't clean the inner part of the CPU. I am afraid that I might brake something inside of it. and there's the helpdesk which is the in charge dept. for that.
how about you? how hygienic are you when it comes to your computer/laptop? how often do you clean it? do you clean it first before you use it?
thanks in advance!

ONCe or twice a year?? hehe =D I will clean my desktop at least once every 3 months or so, because according to research, our computer has got the most germs among all places, and it's also the place whereby we are most likely to pick up virus into the body.. hehe =D
SO normally i will only wipe my desktop with wet wipes, and brush my keyboard b4 wiping it again, also my mouse ^_^ hehe

i use vaccum to clean the keyboards and the cpu not really is cleaned by me.i like to use clean and neat pc i mean who doesnt but the cleaning process is tiring and monotonous as not much aware about fixing the wires so touching the cpu is something which never comes in picture.
But i think there should be some agency of people who are specialised in cleaning the computers as that would be in professional manner and they would be given the necessary equipments for cleaning the pc.

Whenever I use one of the laptops at home, I always try to wipe things that I could wipe off before ever turning it on so that I wouldn't be worrying about pressing buttons while cleaning it.
On our CPU, I often try to wipe off the dust as well, monitor, pick out those tiny details that I see underneath the keys of the keyboard.. I rarely open it up and disassemble those hardware parts that I could dust off. Though I think having dust on those would make them heat up faster? I'm just not sure but, it wouldn't hurt on getting them cleaned every now and then.. however, being careful while doing so should also be kept in mind. (^_^ )

If your office is as well ventilated, as in air conditioned, I might not be worrying too much about over heating.. It would be hazardous though if the place is already hot while you use the computer for long hours.. say those on computer shops with plenty of gamers playing for over six hours onwards?
Well, computer parts produce heat whenever electric currents run within them every time it is used, dust might not contribute to more heat but, it might somehow prohibit the parts from releasing the heat that they produce.. well, that's just what I think.. and I am not sure on that..

really? how about the inside part of the CPU? will it also heat faster if it has lots of dust?

Once a year? Do they have dust where they live? Do they have a cat? My friend had someone clean her computer, he pulled out tons of cat hair. We're told once a season here. Especially after winter with all the road dust from our cars pulling in the driveway and sand from our shoes/boots.

woah! I think once or twice a year isn't enough if your desktop is expose into dust.

Yes, about 4 times a year works better for us here. I'm sure this discussion has helped some people today. Take care.

I really don't like clumps of dust to nestle around my processor, or cuddle up my power supply and then choke the computer's ventilation. I hate the sight of a dirty PC as well, especially the keyboard and the mouse, yikes! I would hate to touch that!
I clean the insides of my PC at least once a month. I wanna make sure dust will not give me hardware failure and loss of ventilation. But I always clean the more tangible and accessible hardware parts everyday -- I brush and wipe the keyboard clean as well as the mouse and the pad. I also like my monitor to look squeaky clean and shining like brand new. I bought cleaning supplies from my local computer store with high recommendations so I'm pretty sure these stuff are safe for my PC.

My goodness zer0charly, after reading your topic I would almost give up using my computer or give up snacking while I am using it...ha, ha. The only part of my computer that I clean, is the monitor and the keyboard. Fortunately for me, my husband is a computer engineer and he is alway upgrading my pc. So whenever he takes it apart which is every second week or so, he always cleans it before he puts it back together again. Mind you, he doesn't always put it back together immediately, he leaves bits of it lying all over the place.

LOL. what a nice husband.
me too, I just clean the keyboard, mouse and the monitor. I just don't want to touch any inner part of the CPU. I am afraid that I might broke something.

Consider me lazy when it comes to cleaning. It's all about my mood. My previous unit suffered greatly from filthiness and dirt which caused it to be garbaged. I usually say that I would, but I never did. My wife had to push me to clean, I just hope that with my laptop, I'll be more of a cleaner.

I wouldn't say that I clean the outside of my computer that much! I'm not in that dusty an environment anyhow so it's not too bad. I don't drink or eat around my computer so I guess there's no problem there. I do however go inside my pc once per year come January. I like to get rid of the build up of dust from the inside. I'm into computers anyway so I love the technical stuff within the pc! I just use a can of compressed air and I blow the dust away. This has to be done at least once per year otherwise the build up of dust will eventually start overheating the internal components causing your pc to fail. I believe I watched a video once about this chap on youtube! He threw his keyboard into the washing machine and this absolutely did the trick! The keyboard came out spotless, you have to leave it to dry for a week of course before reconnecting the thing! Andrew

I used to only clean it once in a while but the lasttime I did it was so nasty I realized that with all of us using it there must be a billion germs on there, so now I do it weekly.

I'm afraid I'm not as conscientious as you! I wipe down my desk once a month or when I think of it, my keyboard gets dusted about that often if I'm lucky. I'm not a housework enthusiast!

whoaa, i never think about that before. that's great you remind we all here. and you have a good habits to clean your desktop time by time (i just wonder how can you spill the keyboard with drink, is it thirsty? ). well, usually if there is some dirt of dust on the top of cpu case, i will just blow it. fhuuu, fhuuuu, it's done but i sometimes also turn over my keyboard and shake and blow it. regarding the inside part of cpu, yeah, i never clean it. i got my current computer only 3 months ago anyway. so, i still have three months more, right?

LOL. I hope that your saliva wouldn't go inside your keyboard while blowing it, because it will cause more dirt!just kidding!
anyway, I sometimes drink coffee, and water in front of my PC and I am so clumsy, that I always spill it.
