My bank crashed!

Last week my bank, Washington Mutual (aka WaMu) went under. This leaves me with a dilemma. I don't want to stay with JPMorgan Chase (who took over WaMu's accounts) because I just don't like their offerings. So I need to find a new bank. I'm looking for one that offers a great free checking account with no minimum balances. And they have to have branches in the Denton, TX area... Any suggestions?

Hi BunGirl - I heard about WaMu going under last week too. I do not have a checking or savings account with them but do have a credit card. I do not think it will affect that but I really do not know. I do not know much about JPMorgan Chase either. I can understand you wanting to find a new bank though. I am sure many thousands of people are doing the same thing as you. I recently opened up a checking account with BB&T in Virginia and I really like them so far. I have free checking with no fees and no minimum balance. They also have other free services that come with the checking account, like free checks and some other things that I still have yet to review and take advantage of. I am not sure if BB&T has branches in Denton, Texas but you might want to check by going to http://www.bbt.com to check out their locations. I checked for you and there is a link at the top of the page to search their locations. Good luck and I hope you find a good bank to switch to. I guess one benefit of my not having much money is that I do not have much to lose either! LoL! My husband has a checking with Bank of America, which is what I used to have, and he likes it. I had no problems with it either. The only reason I switched to BB&T was because we moved and I was bank hunting and liked BB&T's offer of free checking. I am worried about my bank or my husband's bank going under too though. It is really scary because it seems like it happens with absolutely NO warning to the public! All of a sudden you wake up and you discover that you're bank is gone! Let us know which bank you end up going with. Take care & I hope you have a great week.

I could hardly believe it when I heard this. I used to be a phone representative for a mortgage company at a telephone center and we worked a lot with WaMu. And now today in the news the stock market is suffering big time. I'm thinking Great Depression... Now is the time you have to wonder if all the bank deposit insurance is any good... I think you are going to have a hard time finding any bank with good services right now. I believe in a short time, all the banks are going to be scrambling and suffering.
