A couple of months ago we bought my son a parakeet, he named Buddy. Well at the time everything in our lives made having a bird a great pet. However, my husband has just begun working nights. This means that he needs to sleep during the day. The daytime, which is when Buddy, is awake and playing, singing, chirping etc. This is becoming an issue as it disturbs my hubby...he tries not to let it bother him, but if Buddy gets into one of his louder moments, it wakes hubby right from sleep. i ahd thought to try and retrain him to sleep during the day, but i dont think thats even possible, and even so, then he is awake at night when my 5 yr old and I are sleeping. Im not worried about me not sleeping but my son needs to. Buddy always has fresh food, he is allowed out of his cage to play (and is still noisy, but this is a bird, he is going to be..lol), fresh water, and toys in his cage. I dont know what else to do to minimize some of his sound, without stifling him either, i mean thats his natural thing to do and you cant be angry with that. I just dotn want to have to get rid of him, and i cant have hubby not resting, he is working the next 10 wks straight without a day off, he needs the rest..lol HELP! I need advice on what to do

Try putting a towel over Buddy's cage when your husband is sleeping. It mimicks night to a bird and he'll be quiet. You'll need to allow Buddy some extra playtime in a lit room in the evenings to make up for the lost daylight time. Hope this helps!

Yeah i have been covering him up, but its not doing any good..lol. We have discovered if its quiet in the house, rather he is covered or not, he stays pretty quiet. So during the week its been okay, because my son is at school and im usually out running errands or on the computer not making a peep. However, we are discovering today, Sunday, that its a bit different, because my son and I are both home, and the bird is trying to interract with us..lol. Its okay though we have been spending alot of time talking to him and we took him out of the cage for a bit, and so he was quiet...So far hubby hasnt said get rid of him, so we may be okay to keep him for good, at least I hope so...but i welcome all advice in case things start to chagne again..lol

Well here is an update. Hubby was taken off nights..again. SO for now, Buddy gets to stay...still open to suggestions though, in case he does go back to working nights.

Glad he's off nights! I think parakeets are such fun pets....always seem to be so happy and chirping away. They're a pleasure to have around.

can you put him outside your house? or try covering his cage, or put him in the bathroom with the lights off while your husband sleeps.

I have 3 of them and I can sleep threw anything and so they don't bug me but you might put a towel over buddy when he makes too much noise. I would also suggest is putting him a room that he can not hear other birds because he will call out to other birds. I am glad that your hubby is off of nights and so hopely this won't be a problem.
