Do you consider jeans and/or shorts sloppy attire??

I just read a discussion where a poster seems to consider jeans and shorts 'sloppy attire'. What do you think of this attitude? Is it true? Dressing up takes a considerable amount of time because not only do you have to pull together a nice outfit or a dress or suit, you also probably have to accessorize and if you are a lady, there is the matter of hairstyle and/or makeup.
I think you can be quite attractive and functional in jeans or shorts and accessorize accordingly and that one outfit can take you through your day without having do change or 'fix' anything. While some people certainly can look frumpy and sloppy, it irritated me to have someone think that EVERYBODY who wears more casual clothing the majority of the time looks frumpy and sloppy. That is simply untrue and kind of obnoxious.

I just read In Touch magazine today and they showed pictures of Previous Grammy outfits worn by Alicia Keyes, one of her first Grammy outfits were Jeans and a Yellow T-shirt, she made that simple outfit look excellent!
Your right, dressing up takes time. There are many time I want to dress up but by the time I get my kids out of the door I'd probably have a juice stain on my shirt or my hair would be messed up because my daughter likes to pull on my hair or its just not necessary with kids because I do not really have any occasions for it.
Stop hating on jeans and shorts we cant all wear mini skirts and stilettos.
Its funny you brought it up because actually today I had a whole day to myself and I DID dress up without a second thought and Im sure my neighbors are suprised because I do just wear jeans and and a tee or shorts half of the time while Im running around with my kids. But when I dress up, I dress up and thats why I was laughing because my neighbors probably think I have two personalities the way I can dress down and then go to so dressed up. Thats the benefits of being a girl.

Oh, I just remembered. I think this idea that jeans and shorts are sloppy is actually a European view because I know many Europeans believe American's dress like slobs and they often walk down the streets in their best clothes. My bf tells me the same about Turkey. I also know that their is tons of Chinese students on campus who dress in their best clothes often and wonder what they must think about my mommy clothes. oh well, cant win em all. I'd actually like to wear heels with my jeans but is that really practical.

Mommy clothes... lol! I will have to post a photo one of these days of me in my 'mommy clothes' because still to most people I don't even look like I'm in my 30s, much less the mommy part. I don't know if you've ever seen that spoof on Sat Night Live about the 'mom jeans' but actually that whole thing bugs me. Just because we are moms does not mean we are frumpy and not sexy or that we never have time for ourselves. I actually am totally free right now, even having a cup of freshly brewed coffee because my daughter is at school.
I think a little bit of dressing up definitely has to do with how you carry yourself. This is why you can take something that is traditionally thought of as casual and pair it with something that isn't casual and presto - something urban and chic. This is why I like things that are simple and easy to put together though - I like to spend the extra time when I do have it helping my daughter put together something cute to wear and to fix her hair. I don't necessarily need to look cute, just pulled together. I never skip a shower in the morning either!
When I wear a damn miniskirt people think I'm 19! I think I'll have to relegate the skirts to the back of my closet for another couple years.

You know what? Some Americans DO dress like slobs, and part of the problem is that so many people buy clothing that actually does not fit. I really got on that after my daughter was born because I had to replace some of my clothes with things that I did not look smushed into lol. Now I usually try to get jeans or bottoms that fit exactly and then I just get shirts a little bit roomier and longer than necessary to allow for shrinkage. I keep clothing forever, sometimes 10-12 years or more.

Even though I am usually in a pair of jeans or shorts, I do consider that sloppy attire. But, I'm retired I get to dress sloppily and not worry about appearances
As far as females go, I'd much rather see them in a skirt and top or an actual dress than jeans any day

Are you serious? LOL! Ok, well let me put it this way . I consider myself much more smoking hot in jeans than a dress. I think my husband's preference is sans clothing but I suppose that really doesn't belong in a discussion about sloppy attire, does it?

I think lots of women think they are smoking hot in jeans, and many men agree. I just don't think jeans are all that sexy looking on a woman, even if they are skin tight. Yes, without clothing would be better Or, if they feel the need to be dressed, how about wearing a pair of high heels and a smile

Well all I can say is that if that is true then I am one of the sloppy dressers because I live in jeans. Not shorts, but jeans. I wear them everyday, and you would never see me in a skirt unless I was going out for a night out. I think there are some gorgeous really smart jeans about and I think that people can look nice in jeans.

Sheesh! I like my casual attire. I do think that jeans and short can look sloppy in the wrong situation but, I am talking about wearing those things to a wedding or a job interview. But, for every day, unless your job mandates something else, casual isn't sloppy.
And, you can dress up jeans and shorts with your accessories. I wear jeans or capris pretty much every day. But, I don't think that I am frumpy or sloppy. I would challenge almost anyone to tell me otherwise.

No, only when it is dressed up as being sloppy.. You can wear just about anything that can look sloppy. So, that statement is very untrue. Any clothing worn can be sloppy. It can look sloppy if it is not clean and ironed.. And if the clothes are not fitting like it should..

i don't think slipping into a nice pair of jeans and a cute top is dressing sloppy. there is nothing better then feeling sexy in a nice outfit rather it's a pair of jeans or a nice dress or suit. it's not about the clothes but more about how you feel in those clothes. so if you feel good, then you look good. no matter what you have on

I do not at all consider jeans or shorts sloppy attire. I wear jeans all the time and in the summer I always wear shorts. Shorts and jeans are so comfortable.
I do not like wearing suits or dresses at all.

hi mommyboo to me to wear fancy clothes when you are having a heat wave like here in Tustin right now would be really
rather stupid. We all wear shorts and nice tee shirts as the climate really demands it, and to dress up like you are going to the house of Windsor for tea would be to be obnoxiously idiotic to say the least. there are all sorts of shorts in the market and all sorts ofpretty tops. and most places here in southern california shorts or jeans is a must.

Absolutely! It is beginning to cool down here a little - ok well I say that and notice it is still 94 outside. Needless to say I am wearing shorts right now as I type this. I just don't understand why some people would dress up when there is no reason. There is never enough time to finish everything that needs to get done in a day, I don't have extra time to waste and drycleaning gets ridiculous after awhile too. Most nicer fabrics are not compatible with the every-day washer/dryer combo.

i think jeans and shorts can look great if they wear new (or at least not so worn its obvious and shabby) and a nice shirt etc.. as long as every thing is neat and not clashing or wrinkled then i dont see whats wrong with it..

LOL! Yes, as long as you aren't really hard on your clothes, they can last for a long time if you don't grow out of them. I know in the past I have had to get all over my kids to get rid of clothing with holes and rips. I just try to be gentle with my clothes, I like vintage and junk jeans too, things that are not brand new. It is amazing the quality, brand names, and great styles that can be found for a fraction though if you're willing to do that and have the time to try them on and make sure they fit!

Hi mommyboo, Yea I was there and said that straight out
that I felt that jeans with a nice top could be quite
an appropriate outfit to wear to a restaurant or just
about anywhere. I just don't think that poster gets it!
People wear jeans all the time and don't look sloppy. I've
seen people dressed up looking more sloppy then people
in jeans! It has to do how you put your outfit together
and how you carry yourself which to me is the most
important thing. The person that started the discussion
did admit to me that she wasn't very clear in the way
she worded the discussion.

LOL! I just could not wrap my mind around that discussion. Not at all. I am a jeans girl, I have lots of pairs. I can tell you from experience that if I wear one of my favorite pairs (I like low rise boot cut or flare) and a flattering yet not fancy top, I get more comments than if I wore a dress. I'm just not really a dressy person, I prefer understated vs flashy, and plainer vs embellished. Instead of having a lot of color, I'd wear some small jewelry or a clip in my hair, or maybe some funky shoes. I'm also always chasing down somebody, usually a kid and I'd rather be comfortable than worry about my skirt flying up or someone seeing something they shouldn't when I bend over.
I wear jeans (or denim shorts) almost everywhere unless I'm wearing workout clothes. Those too can be attractive AND modest. I had to add that because some people get the idea that everybody wears super short shorts and sports bras and I can tell you that I certainly don't. I COULD but I don't think it's appropriate in front of my kids either.... I don't want them dressing like that!

I wear jeans 98% of the time. I do not look frumpy or sloppy at all. My jeans fit well and anre not full of holes, nor are they stained and thtread-bare. I think that people can look very nice in this attire. I have seem plenty of people who were "dressed up" who looked worse than those standing next to them wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

Another friend and poster hit the nail on the head when she said that it's about being comfortable and confident. If you feel good, you look good. I am uncomfortable in most 'dress up' type clothes - except for things like black tie but I have discovered there are rare if ever yearly occasions for an adult who is also a parent to need to wear black tie. It would be really nice to attend something special and dress up again before we are old and the kids are in college and the hubby retires lol!
I still have in my closet several of the dresses I wore to formal dances in high school, I bet I could still get into them although they are SO FAR OUT OF TREND today! Ha ha!

I don't think wearing jeans and or shorts is sloppy as long as it's not worn on occasions that say formal attire :) jeans and shorts are comfortable. And there are many kinds of shorts for different kinds of situations. even jeans can be paired with nice blouses. well anyways it's all in how you carry yourself casual or not.

I agree - but there are so few occasions that really require formal attire. Most of those will state, such as on an invitation to a benefit, wedding, celebration, 'formal attire, black tie requested' etc.
When I worked in an office, we started out having to wear professional attire, which amounted to dresses, skirts, suits, pumps/heels, pantyhose, etc. It was a royal pain, I worked in A/R and in A/R you never see your clients, you speak and communicate with everybody via phone, internet, email, fax, and the like. There was never anybody from outside our office who came in and saw how we were dressed, whenever others visited, they were usually with our company reps on a different floor. Anyway, my reason for going on and on about this is that there was NEVER ANY REASON for making us dress that way. When the office finally went casual and we were allowed to wear jeans daily and shorts on Fridays, I was totally hopping out of my clothes happy!

I think that shorts tend to look sloppy.
Nice jeans, a nice blouse and blazer, and a pair of shoes other than tennis shoes can look very nice and dressy. It's what I tend to wear to the theatre.... Unless I'm going to a benefit or one night only thing, in which case I'll wear a skirt.

Hmmm. I don't usually wear running or training shoes with jeans, although sometimes I do wear them with shorts. I really should have been a little more descriptive with shorts, I'm not talking about things you wear to work out in. I'm talking about denim shorts, capris, and other stuff you'd wear with a nice top. When it's 106 degrees, there are a lot of clothing options I'm just not in the mood for.
I also should have stated that we should pretend that these clothes are flattering to the wearer and FIT. Too many people choose clothing which is bottom line not flattering for their body shape and either several sizes too large or several sizes too small.

Pants, such as blue jeans, made into shorts by cutting off part of the legs. For a country or beach escape ,fine-tune your city duds as follows:add a pair of jeans or shorts,a sun hat ,a bathing suit and cover-up
