How to make the perfect cuppa?

I am a coffee addict, love everything with cocoa in it (then, who doesn't). But I am at a loss to churn out the perfect coffee. That vending machine stuff is crap. I usually screw up while adding water and sugar. I like my coffee extra strong. Any suggestions??
