The Best Batman?

I've watched all the Batman movies and I've had it out with some friends about who was the best Batman. What do you think? When I saw Michael Keaton as Batman I thought it was sad because he embodied neither Bruce Wayne's charisma nor Batman's heroism. He looked misplaced. Then we had Val Kilmer. Hmm...I honestly don't remember much about that Batman movie. It was just that...forgettable. Then we get to the Clooney films. George Clooney absolutely SUCKED as Batman. That weak chin and he does this thing with his head. It shakes just a little bit when he says something smart. Batman wasn't a smart@$$. And I thought Bruce Wayne was supposed to be youngish. I didn't think I'd ever see Batman that old but I guess a mid-life crisis would explain a grown man putting on a bat mask, driving an expensive drop-top car and going around beating up random "bad" guys. Ah, yes. Now we arrive at Christian Bale. I really think he's the whole Wayne-Batman package - sans the growling voice thing he does when he's dressed as Batman. I could never understand why Batman had to growl at people. You can't understand much of what Bale says when he's Batman. I really could've done without that. But he's a handsome guy, charming and distinguished - just like Bruce Wayne. He's fit and handles the action scenes very well so he's got the Batman part down. I think without a doubt, Christian Bale is the best Batman. Dark Knight was incredible! I can't wait to see the third installment of the Bale Batman series. On a side note, let's give some credit to Adam West. Who can forget the guy with the blue-purple pantyhose and the bat mask with the white lines above the eyes. It looked like someone took a piece of white chalk and just squiggled a line above each eye. I'm still left wondering what dramatic effect those two white lines had on the Batman of yesteryear.

Okay, here's my take: Christian Bale is by far the best Batman. Michael Caine is the best Alfred. Heath Ledger was the best bad guy in the history of film (and that takes strongly into account David Prowse/James Earl Jones' dual efforts with Darth Vader, Anthony Perkins' Norman Bates and Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter). But I'm going to step outside the current franchise and cast my vote for Val Kilmer as the best BRUCE WAYNE. I don't think Michael Keaton or George Clooney really owned that half of the role but Keaton did far outplay Clooney as Batman. Clooney was just a waste of space as either - him and that drunken, wobbly head of his when he ran. I think Batman should be able to keep his head still...

I don't like Adam West's Batman, but that's because I just never really liked that TV show.
I agree with you about the movie Batmans. Michael Keaton seemed miscast. He's a good actor, but he's neither suave enough to be Bruce nor muscular enough to be Batman.
Val Kilmer was so bland, while his movie was a PWP (plot? what plot?).
I'm glad I had the good sense to skip the theater run of Clooney's "Batman & Robin". I only saw it on TV. As you said, his facial expression and head movements looked silly. Like's he's trying hard to look cool.

I definately think that Christian Bale is the best Batman. I don't remember Val Kilmer at all, and George Clooney, while I do absolutely love him in other films, just wasn't a very good Batman. Michael Keaton just didn't seem like he should be Batman, either.
I also think I like Nolan's take on Gotham much more than Tim Burtons. I mean, I know Burton was being, well, sort of cartoon-ish. I just prefer the grittier, more realistic version.
