How creative are you in getting referrals?

I have been passive with my online business for quite a while. I mean that I have been a member of many websites, but I did not bother to advertise them properly in order to get more referrals. But I realized that being passive will not get me too far, so I made a page for myself, with all the earning opportunities I am currently using (http://www.freewebs.com/iearnonline), and started an intense promotion campaign. The result was quite satisfactory: almost 1300 views in the first month (it was not even a full month). All the advertising methods are 100% free, and I am even following Valerie Underhill's (Marketing Pond admin) advices, like replying with my site url to spam e-mails, making flyers and business cards and distributing them all over the city (giving them to those who are interested in extra income opportunities, leaving them on the bus stops, on the seats in public transport etc. These methods can be already too extreme, but actually they work: for some programmes I got more referrals in one month than I had managed to get during the past year. So the lesson I learned from this is that the more attention you pay to advertising, the more you get in return. Is anyone here doing the same crazy things like distributing flyers/business cards/ or replying to all spam e-mails??? If not, what are other effective means you use to attract people to your website and get referrals?
