Do You Feel Grateful When Paying Your Bills?

Okay this may sounds like an oxymoron to feel grateful about paying ones bills.....but. ....
This discussion I think was inspired by a fellow mylotter, who admitted that at the beginning of the month when she has to pay her bills, meaning she has to go to the bank to get the funds for her bills, she gets stressed out thinking of needing to go out and do these errands.
Now I think everyone of us may grumble about paying our bills, especially during these times. Oh, wouldn't it be great instead of using that money for paying bills we could have it all for ourselves and whoop and party it up...buy silly, nonsensical extravagances, dance til dawn and paint the town red, so to say..LOL. Instead we're "stuck" with the bills to be paid.
Our grumbling is especially valid in these economic times, when our costs of living has skyrocketed...our utility bills may have soared, the cost for fuel for cars has soared, even food prices have gone up so our food budget money may not stretch the way it once did.
I receive SSI benefits, and admittedly am barely squeaking by. I do earn a little extra income during the month by my article writing and it too goes for bills. So yes, I could grumble, get into a panic and get stressed out...but being the rather cockeyed optimist I view it a different way.
Yes the optimist in me, gives gratitude to the benefits I do receive. I'm not able to work outside of my home, which is why I receive those benefits in the first place. When the beginning of the month rolls round and I get my benefits in, I'm grateful...yes very grateful and feel blessed. That money allows me to pay my bills, which in turn keeps a rood over my head, pay my electric bill which allow me to keep my electricity on, and also allows me to be connected to the outside world via my computer, and not to mention allows me to pay for my internet service.
I do hope one day to be off my benefits if and when my on-line business plans take root...that is an on-line photography business to sell my images directly to clients in the publishing media. But for now, I'm very grateful for the benefits I do receive.
I remember reading long time ago, in several inspirational type books, the concept of feeling gratitude for the money you have to pay your bills. That when you fill out and sign a check for a bill, to not only feel grateful that you at least have the means to pay it, but bless that check....yes bless it, rather than grumble, curse and swear...LOL
So. Do you feel "gratitude" that while, of course, you may wish to be earning or having more money, that you have the funds for life's basic needs? Or....do you get stressed out, annoyed, grumble and bellyache?
Me? I rather feel gratitude.

I would be on cloud nine if I had the money to pay them. I hate owing bills or being behind in payments, but I have a very limited income.

YOu don't know if you have a more positive outlook than me you cannot say that, you are judging by some posts you read here and you have not even read all of them, very few actually,
you have not even bothered to read any of my inspirational stories and therefore you do not even know that side of me.
from what I see from the posts you write there are many not so positive ones, as well, on your part but I do not judge that because I realize what is put down here is only what is here to make a point about something or other, many times posts are not even read as they were intended to be read by the writer,
people come away with what they want from any post or piece of writing.

Winterose I actually have read quite a number of your "inspirational" stories not just here but on the other site...I just haven't commented on them...And my take is that even though you think they are inspirational and positive I read them as being on a very negative route believe it or not. That's what I get from them.

LOL..winterose what the heck am I going to do with you?
I'm not exactly rolling in dough and paying bills is a crunch for me also...but I do have a more positive outlook in life in general which is why maybe things tend to fall in place for me better and quite often...out of the blue. Maybe the Law of Attraction works for me better and in a lot of regards, not just money wise

Yes I do. I am grateful for my home health and family. And for the money that allows us to manage. There are so many people worse off than we are. Yes things get tight. And can get tighter.
We have done things from the get go to manage. Our car is almost 10 years old. When we bought our home we obtained a fixed mortgage. We do not go on vacations. I could go on. But we have been able to save along the way. Hopefully we will be able to continue on this way. I guess, having had it worse earlier in my life, glad that while it can be rough I have the knowledge how much worse it can be.

Survival skills.Twelve years ago, in a water exercise class, there was this little old farmer, about seventy years old. He commented one evening that he had just paid his $20,000 quarterly estimated taxes. We said something like "Sorry you had to do that." His response was that he was very grateful that he had that high a tax obligation, because it meant he had plenty of income. He commented that he had at one time been poor enough to not owe taxes, and he would rather pay taxes any day than be that poor.

I think with today's economy in particular one has had to cut down on different things....things we used to take for granted but now would be considered luxuries...like vacations..don't ask the last time I went on one..LOL
You're story GardenGerty reminds me of my friend...just a tad...but she was the grumbler type...she had to pay $3,000 in taxes, and has done so for the past few years...she meant to have the taxes automatically withdrawn, but kept forgetting for signing up for that options...so she grumbles about it

This is a great post you've made, and a great way to look at life. I do feel grateful as I know things could be much much worse for me. But I think when I pay the bills I actually and neutral. Well, maybe not. I think I do tend to breathe a sigh of relief at the rent check -- Thank God, I made it thru another month!
But when I go grocery shopping lately I do get very stressed out and depressed. It just puts it all right there in front of my face, because literally, every week I notice the prices have risen again -- and I do most of my shopping at WalMart!
It's better to stop and think of what we do have and be thankful, as you have so well said, especially knowing that so many people in the world have so much less than we.

Yes, grocery shopping can be a real downer...LOL. I get food stamp benefits as well, and I'm noticing more and more they don't stretch out the way they used to and I'm just getting very no frills basics. Thank goodness it's only me I have to shop for...oh, and my two kitties of course..LOL
I'm also grateful that I've found extra means to make some extra money...via my computer and those articles I write. It really does help me out.

I cannot say that I am grateful that I have to pay bills, but I can say that I am grateful that I am ABLE to pay them. I am grateful for the services which I pay for each month, and the fact that most companies here are very couteous. It would be nice if those bills were not so high though. I don't grumblr about paying the bills though. I receive the services, therefore; I pay for them. The only time I get stressed out over them is when money is short.

Ah..yes it would be nice if we didn't have to pay any bills wouldn't it? I guess I could get stressed out about being short, but then it gets my butt moving to work harder on my article writing on-line where I can get some extra money

I sure wish my landlord would accept a check for my rent but he only accepts money orders, which is why I have to trudge to the bank to get money out.

What a great way to look at it. I hear you! I feel great too. Great that I can afford to pay for the things that I need to. I pay my mortgage- and am grateful that I have a great house that is mine. So many people are losing their houses to the banks. I'm thankful every time I get a paycheck from work. There are days when I hate my job, but I say it's a job- others aren't so lucky! The only bill I get mad at is the credit card-- that is when I say to myself- you idiot! why did you spend this?

You are blessed that you can pay your mortgage as I hear so many people can't. I groan now that I have a credit card debt too...but I've been using it to stretch out my bills...dumb I know, but not like I'm using it for silly, goofy things. I'm having a real major dispute with my electric bill as they've been estimates and I just know I'm paying more than I should...so just to pay it off, I've been using my credit card to pay it...shessh

I'm spending the night at my parent's house (which is how I'm on the computer this late), and I was just telling my dad that. I said I felt so good about being able to pay my bills. I had just written two checks for two different bills, and am sending them out tomorrow. I still have to put some things on my one credit card, but even then I'm able to pay much more than the minimum payment. I am grateful, even with what I went through this past week (got a notice all benefits were canceled).

I got your e-mail Pye. My sister and brother-in-law are coming up today so I'm just checking a few e-mails, but I'll make sure to get back to you about that by the end of today. I appreciate your support. I'm in cleaning mode right now. I mopped my parent's kitchen floor. My mom can't really see when it is dirty, so I did it. I did the dusting, so next is the bathroom! I really don't want to do that.

Yes I feel very happy and grateful when I am able to get my bills paid. I give thanks every time the rent is paid. It gets harder when the bills go up but like you said a little work online here and there does help out, we could be spending the same amount of time online and not make a red cent so I am grateful for this too.

Well, I have to say I do feel grateful when paying our bills. I feel this way because the bills that we have to pay, are reasonably, from those things that we use in our day-to-day life. And while others get stuck from being unable to pay their bills, we, on the other hand, are able to meet up with our deadlines, and that's something to be grateful for. There are times when after paying all the bills, there's almost nothing left to spend for a bit of enjoyment, but that's ok with us. What matters is that we've paid our dues, and we're all, at least comfortable enough in our day-to-day life.

Yes I think a lot of people after they pay their bills may not have much leftover for "fun" but at least with paying those bills it does keep a rood over one's head, and food on the table.

i'm not sure it's so much a sense of gratitude than as a "thank god,i made it this month".it's a sense of relief when they're paid.

I am thankful that we have such a nice roof over out head. I wish the payments where not so high but alas they are. I do like that we have enough money to keep the nice roof over out head.
I also am thankful that I am well enough to be able to work part time. I am thankful that I have not lost my social security because I only work enough to keep my benefits.

Yes I do have a grateful heart when it comes to paying bills and having enough money in the bank to do so every month. I don't get upset or anything of that nature but pure happiness for being able to pay them and have enough to get groceries with as well.
Sorry for being so late in responding but I've been so down and out lately that I haven't felt like responding to any of the discussions. I'm trying like hell to snap out of it but nothing seems to work. I might have to see my doctor for it because it's going on too much too long and I hate being this way. UGH!! All I want to do is sleep and I've had to push myself the past three days to do things that need doing and since I had the time to do it... to do it and I did but still my attitude hasn't changed. Soooo bear with me if I'm late! I know you said you're way behind too so I'm sure you understand but wanted to explain why I am anyway.

now come to think of it, yes i do feel grateful. it has never occurred to me to think this way. i won't say i get stressed out by the bills. but i certainly don't have a good word for the bill payee. as you mentioned, it is true that i should be grateful for the ability to pay bills. not many are fortunate to earn enough to cover all the bills. i've read about people scrimping and scraping just so that they have enough for the bills. guess i should stop complaining about the bills and start enjoying the feeling of being able to pay all the bills. thanks for this very interesting and uplifting insight. cheers ;p

I'm glad you think my insight is uplifting...We have a lot of homeless people in my area, which is probably all the more reason I'm grateful that I do have a roof over my head..may not be a mansion (LOL) but it's home..what a wonderful word

Honestly, it all depends on the mood I am in that day! Sometimes I grumble when I go to pay the bills and see what is left over. But other times, especially after a particularly difficult money situation and it all gets worked out...I am grateful just to have the money to pay the bills and live.
There have been times that the military has sent my husband away and the finance department messed things up. Money was not paid on time, big stress all around. When everything gets cleared up and we get paid, I am always thankful. The money is there and I can pay everything.

I do feel very grateful for everything I have. I am very grateful I found the means to squeak by for another month. It is touch out there these days and every little bit helps.
I feel there is no use to stress because usually I find a way to make sure everything is paid. Although I am the type of person not to live outside of my means.
I live a simple but very cherished life. I love when I can proudly walk into my realtors office and hand over that that check , instead of groveling and saying , can I have a few more days. I do take a certain pride in being able to have my cable and Internet every month and I am very privileged to be able to have all these things I do have.
I completely agree with you . Be happy that you can pay your bills . Many can not.

I gotta admit that this thread's title made my eyebrow go up by instinct. But after reading your post, I have to say I admire your ability to find something positive in the act of paying bills. As for me, I grumble every time I get my bills and grumble even more when I pay them. But I get what you mean that there are people who have worse problems.

It's funny...I've never grumbled about paying bills. I'm thankful I have the means to pay them. I guess my past experience last year made me realize this more than ever when suddenly out of the blue my benefits were cut off completely and all I had was $5.71 to my name. I did eventually get my benefits back within only a month's time....so nope...I'm just plain grateful I have those benefits to have roof over my head
